Nyo-ho!
~ Gyro's famous catchphrase
This job is my duty... and that will never change... It hasn't in the past and it won't change from here on. But I just want consent! I want to make this duty the pride of my heart! Guilty or innocent! There needs to be consent! Pride and honor cannot exist without consent! I will put my life on the line for pride and honor. Isn't there a way? Not all laws are justice! I cannot agree with putting that boy to death!
~ Gyro Zeppeli about Marco's execution
Johnny! Lesson 5!... yeah… I’m sure that’s what we’re on now. The next one’s lesson 5! I always tried to take the fastest shortcut in this Steel Ball Run race, but, “the shortest route was a detour. It was the detour that was our shortest path”. It’s been true the whole time we’ve been crossing this continent. And because of you, we were able to take that route.
~ Gyro's last words

Julius Caesar Zeppeli, best known as Gyro Zeppeli is a major character in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, serving as the deuteragonist of Steel Ball Run.

Born as a member of one of the most respected families of the Kingdom of Naples, the Zeppelis, Gyro searches to follow his dad's footsteps as a trained surgeon, and as the next in line to become the king's loyal executioner as well as mastering the art of the spin utilizing spherical objects known as the steel balls.

However, one event would drastically change the course of his life, as a 9-year-old boy called Marco would end up being unfairly condemned by treason by the Neapolitan Court, and since treason was treated as an unforgivable crime that is punishable by death, the only way to be freed from it is by receiving amnesty by the king. Knowing that he would be the one that would have to handle his execution, Gyro tries to do anything to prevent it from happening, with no success, but while trying to appeal the execution a lord of Naples explains to him that the only way the king would give amnesty to political criminals would be if the country suddenly gained prestige.

Upon being told that, Gyro decides to enter the Steel Ball Run Race against his father's wish, in order to try to get amnesty for Marco, there he ends up meeting Johnny Joestar, while initially very dismissive towards him, Gyro quickly grew to admire him thanks to his determination offering him to race alongside him the rest of the race, serving as his mentor and best friend through the part.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • His entire motivation for entering and wanting to win the Steel Ball Run is to prevent Marco, who was wrongly accused of treason, from being executed by the Neapolitan Court.
  • He develops a genuine bond with Johnny through the part, and deeply cares about him to the point that he would throw himself in danger to save him with no hesitation at all.
  • Despite his own reason for wanting to win the Steel Ball Run, he still respects Johnny's initial wish to gather the Holy Corpse's parts and supports him with it, due to realizing how important that was to him personally.
  • He really trusts Johnny and believes in his potential to learn the art of the spin, even during moments that could lead to his own death (as shown in the fight against Sandman for example), despite Johnny constantly doubting himself (and even seeing himself as useless), playing a key role in his development and to take him out of his depressive state.
  • He has fewer resources in comparison to other JoJo heroes, due to not having a stand for most of the part, having to rely only on his technique with the steel balls and on his tactical ability to outsmart and defeat his opponents in combat.
  • Despite having a tendency of being pretty rude and dismissive towards people, he often subverts this and develops a genuine respect for Johnny's sheer determination to reach out to him, Lucy's bravery for doing anything to keep her husband safe, Mountain Tim's good heart, Wekapipo's technique and proficiency with the steel balls and even Ringo Roadagain's resolve to beat him (albeit begrudgingly in this case).
  • While he is a court executioner, he is very reluctant to kill, only really doing it when it's needed, and is also often disturbed by how cold Johnny can be when it comes to killing enemies.
  • Despite being very hesitant and not trusting him at all, he still decided to give Andre Boomboom a piece of firewood so he could use it to treat his infection.
  • Defeats Oyecomova, a Neapolitan terrorist who had fatally injured Mountain Tim, and was sent to kill him in order to destabilize the monarchy.
  • Defeats Dr. Ferdinand, a terrorist hired by Valentine that was willing to turn an entire town into dinosaurs in order to accomplish his goal of taking the corpse parts.
  • He is quite altruistic (something his own father often calls him out claiming that it would bring ruin to the Zeppeli family at some point), and even though he considers this his biggest weakness he still does it anyway, having no problem helping helpless people and checking out if his race rivals are ok or not from time to time.
  • As a surgeon, he hates when he's not able to save someone's life or if someone is a lost cause and keeps trying to find a way to help them no matter how bad the patient's state is.
  • During the fight against Wekapipo, it's revealed that he and his family saved his sister by taking her as a patient when no one else in Naples wanted to, and even though he failed in curing her blindness, this ended up being a good thing as it allowed her to live due to being seen as harmless. This revelation causes Wekapipo to shift his allegiances and help Johnny and Gyro with their journey in gratitude.
  • He willingly gave the Eye of Christ he had gotten to Lucy, essentially giving up his scan ability (something that would allow him to be able to see stands) so she wouldn't infiltrate Valentine's house defenseless.
  • Once Valentine has all of the corpse parts, he and Johnny decide to team up to defeat him. Even though the United States would have become a Utopia had Valentine succeeded with his plan, the rest of the world would be reduced to hell as a result of it.
  • Broke his own personal rule of never allowing a woman to ride his horse with him when he saves a dying Lucy Steel, taking her away from Valentine in order to prevent her from merging with the corpse completely and thus killing her.
  • During his fight against Valentine, he could have saved himself and prevented his death by moving into Love Train's light, but doing that would have killed some random person across the globe, meaning that Gyro essentially chose dying over killing an innocent person.
    • In addition, during his final moments he teaches Johnny the last lesson about the spin, allowing him to unlock Tusk Act IV and defeat Valentine.
  • After his death, he respects Johnny's decision of not making a deal with Valentine to bring him back to life and wishes him to take care of himself with the rest of his journey.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Despite being heroic for the most part, Gyro can be very stubborn and doesn't trust people easily, which leads to some of his jerkier moments. Examples include him telling Hot Pants to "eat shit and fall off her horse" once she suggested to team up with them, and nearly let Andre Boomboom die from an infection due to not trusting him (even as far as thinking it could be a fake infection), only deciding to help him at the last moment. (To his credit though, his suspicions ended up being correct when it comes to the latter as Andre and his family attacked them right after).
  • He has his selfish moments and at the race he wants to get first place at any cost, including once using a steel ball in the first stage of the race to try to disrupt his opponents (which even leads to him getting a penalty) and getting genuinely angry at Johnny for a moment when he finished a stage of the race ahead of him.
  • His rude and dismissive attitude isn't always subverted, with Hot Pants being the prime example as he never really changes his mind about her, and even wanted to steal her food once just to spite her (whether he ACTUALLY stole it or not is left ambiguous).
  • As mentioned above, he has a really weird personal rule of never allowing a woman to ride his horse with him (although it's more out of superstition than out of misogyny since he believes that if he did that, "Lady Luck" would get jealous of it and turn his luck against him).

Trivia[]

  • He is the first character from the SBR continuity to be considered Near Pure Good, and also the only member of the Zeppeli bloodline to be added here.
