“ | Oversurge, Azure Striker! | „ |
~ Gunvolt's catchphrase and most famous quote. |
“ | Asimov, you did a lot for me. I'll forever be in your debt. You freed me from Sumeragi's hellhole. You raised me. For that, I will always be grateful. However! If what you said is your true desire, then...you are no different from the likes of Nova or Copen! I won't let you use Joule...I'll stop you! | „ |
~ Gunvolt rejecting Asimov. |
“ | I've been in your position! Vengeance won't help! It's not noble! It's just giving into the worst of yourself! | „ |
~ Gunvolt trying to get Copen to give up on his quest for vengeance. |
Gunvolt is the main protagonist of the mainline Azure Striker Gunvolt series. The titular Azure Striker, he starts off as a member of QUILL under Asimov's command, only to leave them over a disagreement on what to do with the Muse. He has since then continued to work towards a world at peace between Adepts and humans, despite all the opposition he faces along the way.
He is voiced by Kaito Ishikawa in the Japanese versions of all media he is featured in, while in the English dub of the OVA, he is voiced by Josh Keller. In the English version of Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, he is voiced by Sean Chiplock.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- While he infiltrated Sumeragi to destroy the Muse for QUILL, he decided to spare her when he learned the Muse was a person, Joule, rather than a program like he initially thought, and resisted Asimov's insistence that he kill her anyway, instead choosing to rescue and protect her from Sumeragi.
- Left QUILL so he could protect Joule and let her live something resembling a normal life, while still taking on jobs from QUILL as a hitman so that he could earn money for the two of them.
- Willingly sabotaged Sumeragi facilities and took on the Sumeragi Swordsmen, thus throwing a massive wrench in Sumeragi's plans to oppress Adepts.
- Defeated Copen "The Adept Slayer" on two occasions when Copen was getting in the way of his goal, and allowed him to flee so he could focus on his original objective.
- When Joule is kidnapped by Merak and taken to Sumeragi Tower, Gunvolt doesn't even hesitate to attack the Tower, fighting the resurrected Swordsmen and Copen so he can rescue her.
- Kills Nova and saves Joule from him, thus putting an end to Project Muse.
- When he learns of Asimov's true goals to destroy all the humans in the world to create an Adept empire, he rejects his offer to help him rule over his empire and stands against him, dying for it in the Bad Ending and killing him over it in the True Ending, an act he shows remorse for since Asimov was his father-figure.
- Completely cuts ties with QUILL after Asimov's death, thus no longer being a hitman.
- Between the first game and the second, he saved Quinn Sakurazaki, despite being in a depressed state thanks to the events of the first game.
- In the second game, he learns about Zonda's plot and her organisation, Eden, who are trying to kill all humans in a similar vein to Asimov, and does everything he can to stop it, killing her commanders, "The Seven".
- When Joule's powers are stolen by Zonda, Gunvolt does his best to get them back, even willingly fighting Copen for them. This also includes killing The Seven, as they are hidden within their Grimoires.
- Infiltrates Eden's fortress, the Garden, to fight Zonda directly, and kills her. This comes at a cost, as Mytyl, Copen's sister, ends up dying, and Gunvolt shows remorse for being unable to save her.
- When Copen attacks him in a blind rage as a result of the above, Gunvolt makes an honest attempt to talk him out of his crusade against Adepts, using his own experiences with Asimov to empathise with him and telling him that revenge won't do anything for him. Noticeably, he actually gets Copen to consider what he says, only for Copen to state that he's come too far to stop.
- Now that Mytyl has been revived and become one with Joule, Gunvolt lets her go, wanting nothing more than for her to have a normal life even if that means he can't be a part of it.
- While he went berserk in the third game and had to be sealed away, this was due to his Primal Dragonization, which took complete control over his individuality. When Kirin restores him back to normal, he is devastated by the destruction his actions caused, and is determined to make things right.
- Helps stop the Berserk Adepts, who were wreaking havoc thanks to the Dragon Radiation corrupting them.
- Learns about the ATEMS organisation infiltrating the country, and does everything he can to learn their goals, including breaking into their Sunrise Palace. After learning Zed's goal is to take over the world to unite it under his rule and keep Moebius under his control, he rejects his ideals, believing the world should not be controlled by one man alone.
- After accidentally fusing with Moebius and fearing that with this fusion, he will destroy the world as he saw in Moebius' vision, he takes different actions depending on the ending:
- In the Bad Ending, Gunvolt begins to lose his mind, but regains enough control to rush forth and impale himself on Kirin's sword, killing himself while ensuring that Moebius' Octima and Astral Order are also destroyed.
- In the True Ending, he realises that Moebius was trying to kill him to prevent the destruction of the world, and combines his powers with Moebius to try and reverse that otherwise inescapable fate, abandoning the current timeline entirely to save the future.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He is overall too lethal to be Pure Good. He defaults to killing his enemies, being known as rather merciless, and does not often try to talk things through with them. Even though he doesn't kill any named enemies in the third game, this is largely due to Kirin holding him back. However, this is a minor prevention, considering that by Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, he acknowledges that he and Nova should have talked things out, thus showing remorse, and is at least capable of showing mercy, like with Copen.
- While mostly toned down in the third game, he still has a few moments where he is aloof and a bit of a jerk.
Trivia[]
- Gunvolt is currently the only character in the Azure Striker Gunvolt series to be Near Pure Good.
