Groot is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He is the offspring of a former Groot who sacrificed himself to protect the Guardians of the Galaxy. Though a baby, Groot managed to aid his allies in defeating Star-Lord's father, Ego the Living Planet. In 2018, he attempted to stop Thanos from wiping out half of the universe, but was erased from existence. He was resurrected by the Hulk in 2023, and helped his teammates and allies defeat Thanos and his army.
He is voiced by Vin Diesel, who also voiced his vegetative parent.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Although he was initially too mischievous, jerkish and spoiled, was lethal to the Ravager Retch by dropping him off a great height (though he was abused by him), and was incompetent by almost endangering the guardians due to wanting to push the wrong button on the bomb, those were understandable since he was still a kid at the time and had severe moral agency issues, and by the time of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 where he acts more mature, he subverts nearly all of these immature qualities and develops a clear moral agency.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2[]
- He frees Nebula from her chains so that she can save Rocket.
- He helps Yondu Udonta and Rocket escape from their cell by trying several times to bring the Yaka Arrow Controller to Yondu, succeeding thanks to Kraglin.
- It's also worth noting that he was willing to give Yondu a Ravanger badge as a hat despite having a dislike for them after another misunderstanding, meaning that he's willing to support others' interests even if he doesn't like them.
- He goes into Ego's brain and destroys it with Rocket's bomb.
- He welcomes Yondu to the Guardians.
- He attends Yondu's funeral to pay his respects.
I Am Groot[]
- He tries to get more leaves for the Grunds to feed on and seems to be very horrified when he accidentally steps on them.
- After accidentally opening a hole on the Benatar he tries to stitch it up with duct tape.
- He saves Rocket from being sucked into space when a second explosion happens.
Avengers: Infinity War[]
- He and the other Guardians answer a distress call from the Asgardians and subsequently rescue Thor when he was unconscious and floating in space.
- He accompanies Thor and Rocket to Nidavellir to create a weapon powerful enough to potentially kill Thanos.
- When noticing Thor's dying state after having to withstand the full force of the Nidavellir star, he uses his arm to grasp the 2 fragments of the Stormbreaker axe despite the incredibly hot metal causing him a great deal of pain. He grows his arm into a suitable length and constructs a makeshift handle before chopping it off, completing the weapon and saving Thor's life in the process.
- He fights in the Battle of Wakanda against the outriders alongside Thor & Rocket and even saves some of the heroes that were initially being overpowered by them upon their arrival.
- He uses dozens of roots from the Earth to stall Thanos so Scarlet Witch can finish destroying the Mind Stone.
Avengers: Endgame[]
- After being resurrected by Hulk, he goes alongside all the other heroes to fight in the Battle of Earth against Thanos.
- He later attends Tony Stark's funeral alongside the Guardians.
Thor: Love and Thunder[]
- He and the other guardians help Thor get back into shape.
- He fought off swamp-robotic creatures alongside the Guardians.
- He watches the many distress calls caused by Gorr the God Butcher in horror, and goes with the guardians to try to help as many as he can.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special[]
- He and the other guardians purchase and rebuild Knowhere in the aftermath of Thanos's attack.
- He helps Mantis throw a Christmas celebration for Quill.
- While he does participate in the kidnapping of Kevin Bacon by bringing him to Quill inside the present, he was likely unaware he was committing human trafficking. He was also just trying to do something nice for his friend.
- He gives wood carvings he made to all his teammates for Christmas.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3[]
- He tries to fight against Adam Warlock after he attacked Rocket and dispatched Nebula, using his body to restrain him and continues doing so even after being vastly overpowered by the latter.
- He becomes very worried when Rocket is mortally wounded by Warlock and goes to Orgocorp alongside the other Guardians to find a passcode that could override the kill switch preventing them from treating his injuries.
- He willingly stays behind to monitor Rocket's status while the Guardians and Gamora break into Orgocorp.
- He arrives with the Bowie at the spaceport to save the guardians and Gamora.
- Although he scares the citizens of Counter-Earth by going in his Kaiju form and screaming to frighten them further despite them only acting in self-defense, he only did it on Nebula's command. Even then, he never actually hurt anyone and even transformed back once the situation de-escalated.
- He berates Drax for acting disrespectfully in a resident's house.
- He goes with Quill and Nebula to have a facedown with the High Evolutionary, even though it was likely to be a trap.
- He takes out many of the High Evolutionary's men because of the cruel experiments they did to Rocket.
- He jumps out of a building from several feet and into the exploding Counter-Earth to save Quill and retrieve Theel's passcode which was needed to override the kill switch inside Rocket.
- He goes back to the High Evolutionary's ship to rescue Nebula, Mantis and Drax who were being imprisoned there at the time.
- He stays behind to save the Star Children imprisoned on the ship, knowing that they would die if they were kept there further.
- He fights against the Hellspawn and the High Evolutionary's men. Afterwards, he and the other Guardians aid Rocket in his battle against the High Evolutionary, resulting in his ultimately well-deserved defeat.
- He and the other Guardians save the many animals that were also imprisoned on the ship.
- He saves an injured Adam Warlock, stating that everyone deserves a second chance much to even the latter's surprise as he tried to kill him and the Guardians moments prior and on other occasions.
- He mournfully tries to reach out for Quill in an effort to save him when he was slowly dying in space.
- He interacts with the Star Children by giving them food and later dances alongside all the Knowherians and Guardians.
- He goes to Krylor with the new guardians to protect the townspeople from a stampede.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite subverting nearly all of his corrupting qualities he is still shown to be lethal like his teammates at times, as shown when he killed Iwua by ejecting him into space even though he wasn't trying to hurt him in any way and helped Star-Lord in his somewhat brutal murder of Theel by crashing him against the ground after jumping from the High Evolutionary's ship (though given that it was necessary for them to gouge out his head implant that had the codes for deactivating Rocket Raccoon's kill switch, it's at least understandable).
Trivia[]
- He was originally believed to be the same Groot that appears in the 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy film, before James Gunn confirmed they possess separate consciences.
