The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.
~ G-Man to Gordon Freeman

Gordon Freeman is the main protagonist of the Half-Life series, an FPS thriller franchise created by Valve in 1998. He is depicted as a bespectacled Caucasian man from Seattle, with brown hair and a signature goatee, who graduated from MIT with a PhD in Theoretical Physics. He was an employee at the Black Mesa Research Facility.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

Background[]

  • Even before the Black Mesa Incident, Gordon wished to see his quantum computing and astrophysics projects used in practical civilian applications rather than weapons research, an early indication of his care for humanity.
  • He cares about his niece to an extent as he has a photo of her inside his locker, indicating she's important to him.
  • While he refuses to show remorse for the creatures he killed, his actions were justified, as they were monstrous and deserved their fate. This includes the Combine, which had oppressed humanity for 20 years—until Gordon stepped in to lead the charge for liberation.

Half-Life[]

  • Although he indirectly caused the Resonance cascade, he immediately gets to work to fix his mistake as soon as he learns where the Lambda Team is stationed, and works to close the breach between Xen and Earth from the get-go.
  • Helps several scientists and security guards throughout the incident, working with them in order to further the goals of repelling Xen and the Military out of the facility.
  • Protects Scientists from the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit after seeing an HECU Marine kill an innocent scientist.
  • Helps Launch a satellite in an attempt to reverse the effects of the resonance cascade, fighting through both Xenian Aliens and HECU Marines in order to do so.
  • Rescues three scientists who were hiding from the HECU Marines in the Advanced Biological Research Lab.
  • Travels to Xen and Kills the Nihilanth, the leader of the Xenian military forces in order to seal the breach between Xen and Earth.

Half-Life 2[]

  • Upon being told that Eli Vance is being held at Nova Prospekt by Alyx, Gordon sets out across Highway 17 to reach Nova Prospekt in order to rescue Eli from the prison.
  • Helps defend a resistance outpost from a Combine Gunship.
  • Once he reaches Nova Prospekt, he helps Alyx rescue Eli Vance from the prison, though they are foiled by Judith Mossman.
  • Caused the destruction of Nova Prospekt, which sparked The Uprising in City 17.
  • Aids Barney and the resistance in their fight against the Combine, ultimately pushing the Combine all the way to the edge of the Citadel.
  • Helps Barney disable a suppression device that was hampering resistance attacks on the Overwatch Nexus.
  • Fights his way through the Citadel, refusing Dr. Breen's offer to join forces with the combine multiple times because he knows he is a hypocrite and a liar.
  • Destroys the Citadel's dark fusion reactor, further loosening the Combine's grip over City-17.

Half-Life 2 Aftermath[]

  • Reactivates the containment field for the Citadel Core, likely buying time for hundreds of citizens to escape City-17 safely.
  • Saved Alyx from a stalker that was attacking her while fleeing from City-17.
  • Allows safe passage for a large number of citizens/rebels to reach the Train station by acting as a diversion to the Combine forces who chase him and Alyx through a hospital.
  • Helps evacuate several citizens and rebels to the Technical Trainstation, allowing them to leave the city unscathed.
  • Protects Alyx from Antlions in the Victory Mines, allowing time for the Vortigaunts to arrive and heal her.
  • Helps the Vortigaunts get the Nectarium, which is necessary to fully help Alyx recover from her injuries.
  • Descends into a zombie-infested mining settlement to reach the Muscle Car which is necessary for him and Alyx to reach White Forest in time.
  • Disables a Combine Autogun that was hampering resistance movement in the Outlands.
  • Defends White Forest from a Combine Assault twice. The first instance is when the combine breach the underground section of the facility and start massacring the rebels located therein. The second instance is defending the site from an assault by a group of Hunters and Striders who were hellbent on destroying the rocket that eventually closes the portal from Earth to the Combine Overworld.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Even if he didn't mean for it to happen, he caused the Resonance Cascade, a cataclysmic event which nearly resulted in human extinction, making him indirectly responsible for millions, if not billions, of deaths all over the world.
  • As admirable and noble as he is, he ultimately suffers from a huge lack of characterization due to never speaking once in the franchise. On top of that, he doesn't get any cutscenes, which means there's no way of telling his personality from that either. However, we can clearly see that he is a righteous and noble man who fights to take down the combine and free earth, so this is quite a small prevention

Trivia[]

  • Him, Alyx, and Barney are the only Half-Life Near Pure Goods.
    • He's also a rare Near Pure Good Hero with a shockingly high kill count; although they were in self-defense due both the HECU and the Combine trying to kill him, once he indirectly unleashed the Resonance Cascade, his personal kill count became considerably higher due to innocents being killed as a result of Xen invasion on Earth, even though he tried to fix everything, which makes him indirectly responsible for the near human extinction. Whether this can result in having his status as Near Pure Good ultimately stripped or not remains ambiguous.
