KA... ME... HA... ME... HAAAAAA!!!!
~ Goku using the Kamehameha, his most iconic attack.
You haven't figured it out yet? I'm the Saiyan who came all the way from Earth for the sole purpose of beating you. I am the warrior you've heard of in legends, pure of heart and awakened by fury, that's what I am. I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN!!! SON GOKU!!!
~ Goku's speech to Frieza after awakening Super Saiyan.
No see, I don't think if it like I'm saving the world. The fact is, it's cause I'm usually trying to challenge the strongest warriors I can find. That's how this tournament happened too. But I can't bear the thought of innocent lives getting wiped out just cause I wanna fight the best. So I'll do what I can for them.
~ Goku explaining his worldview to Android 17.

Son Goku, born Kakarot, is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise.

Born on Planet Vegeta to a race of powerful and barbaric alien warriors known as the Saiyans, Kakarot was sent to Earth as a baby by the Saiyan Army to destroy all life on the planet and conquer it for its future sale. However, after a head injury, Goku forgot all about his violent Saiyan origins, and he would befriend its populace and devote himself to protecting the Earth from all those who threaten it, as well as strive to become the strongest warrior possible.

In Japanese, he is voiced by Masako Nozawa, who also voiced his son Goten, in the Japanese version of the anime, by the late Kirby Morrow, in the Ocean English dub, and by Sean Schemmel in the Funimation English dub. He is also voiced by Seth Green, Hugh Davidson, Jeffrey Watson, Dave Bridges, Ian James Corlett, Peter Kelamis, David Gasman, Steve Blum, Nesty Calvo Ramirez, Jeremiah Yurk, Yuri Lowenthal, Richard Ian Cox, and Lex Lang.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • While his head trauma altered his personality and made him lose his saiyan savage nature, nothing implies that he lacks moral agency given that he clearly knows the difference between right and wrong.
  • While he was somewhat mischievous and lethal in the original Dragon Ball series, he mostly outgrew this as he got older.
  • He helps redeem multiple villains throughout the series, such as Yamcha, Tien, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Broly (Super counterpart, as the Z counterpart is completely irredeemable).
  • Is able to ride the Nimbus Cloud, which is said can only be rode by those who are pure of heart and don't have any selfish desires.

Dragon Ball[]

  • Saves Jingle Village from the Red Ribbon Army, freeing the town and Android 8, an android created by the Red Ribbon Army and made to fight against his will.
  • Defeats Mercenary Tao, the world's most deadly assassin, and when Tao asks to be spared, Goku accepts.
  • Assists Upa in collecting the Dragon Balls in order to revive his father, Boro, who was killed by Mercenary Tao.
  • Singlehandedly defeats the Red Ribbon Army, thus saving the world from their nefarious plans.
  • Was completely immune to Devilman's Devilmite Beam.
  • Saves a town from two bandits known as Terror and Plague, who were terrorizing the town with the Gourd of Mist.
  • Puts an end to Tambourine, avenging the deaths of all the martial artists slain by him and preventing him from killing any more martial artists.
  • Killed King Piccolo, only because he was a huge threat.
  • Uses the Dragon Balls to resurrect Krillin, Master Roshi, and Chiaotzu.
  • When fighting Chi-Chi in the martial arts tournament, upon remembering her and the promise he made, asks her to marry him out of respect and love for her.
  • After defeating Piccolo in the World Tournament, urges Kami to spare Piccolo and gives him a Senzu Bean to fully heal him.
  • Saves the Ox King from being burned alive by retrieving the Bansco Fan Master Roshi had once thrown out and putting out the fire.

Dragon Ball Z[]

  • Upon hearing Raditz telling him of his identity and his status as a Saiyan, Goku refuses to join his brother in his quest to conquer other planets and kill innocent people.
  • When Goku has Raditz immobilized with a grip on his tail, after Raditz asks Goku mercy, he decides to let go of his tail, and despite it being a trick, is a display of Goku's honorable and merciful nature.
  • Saves Gohan from Raditz.
  • Sacrifices himself by holding Raditz down to give Piccolo enough time to charge his Special Beam Cannon, killing both him and Raditz.
  • Single handedly defeats Nappa and prevents him from killing Gohan and Krillin.
  • Openly expresses his disgust in how Vegeta killed Nappa despite being his enemy.
  • Fights Vegeta alone and manages to defeat him with the assistance of Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe.
  • Is heartbroken after realizing he was the one who killed Grandpa Gohan. While it was a complete accident considering that he didn't know that the tail would transform him into a Great Ape since he was young at the time, he still feels bad about it.
  • Tells Krillin to spare Vegeta's life.
  • Upon arriving on Namek, he saves Gohan's life by giving him a Senzu Bean, then defeats both Recoome and Burter.
  • Gives Vegeta a Senzu Bean despite being his enemy.
  • Scolds Vegeta for killing Recomme and Burter even after they'd already been defeated.
  • After seeing Ginyu's honorable nature and decision not to break Goku's back after having been given the opening by Jeice's interference, Goku asks Ginyu to stop fighting and attempts to guide him to redemption.
  • When Ginyu's body is transferred to a frog, Goku tells Vegeta to spare Ginyu since he isn't a threat any longer.
  • When seeing Frieza mercilessly fire a Death Beam into Vegeta's chest after having severely beaten him, Goku expresses his disgust at how Frieza attacked him even when he couldn't defend himself.
  • Gives Vegeta a proper burial after his death, openly expressing his admiration for Vegeta's sense of pride.
  • After Vegeta pleads him to beat Frieza for the pride of the Saiyans and the revelation that he was responsible for the destruction of Planet Vegeta, Goku vows to defeat Frieza to avenge the Saiyan race and everyone else killed by him.
  • When Frieza survived the Spirit Bomb, Goku tells Gohan to leave Namek and take Bulma and Piccolo so he can fight Frieza alone to ensure their safety.
  • When seeing Frieza's power level begin to drop, chooses to end the fight instead of killing him, merely warning Frieza to never show himself again and declaring his rule as Emperor of the Universe to be over.
  • Even after everything he did, Goku chooses to give Frieza some of his energy out of mercy.
    • Although he was forced to blast Frieza in the end, he felt remorse doing so, implying that he didn't want the fight to end like that.
  • After sensing Frieza and King Cold in Earth, Goku tried to resolve the situation by arriving at Earth first, only stopping because Future Trunks already stopped them by the time he arrived.
  • He tried to defeat Android 19.
  • After Tien completely burns out his energy to delay Semi-Perfect Cell from absorbing Android 18, Goku arrives and saves Tien from being killed.
  • While he did knock Gohan down, it was only to keep him safe as he knew Cell would kill him.
  • When Cell is about to destroy the Cell Games fighting ring, Goku yelled to his friends to get away from the ring.
  • When Piccolo explains Gohan's pacifistic nature and his unwillingness to fight, Goku shows great remorse in placing so much stress on his son and attempts to correct this by fighting Cell again and having Krillin give him a Senzu Bean, though Cell steals the Senzu Beans before this can happen.
  • When Cell prepares to self-destruct, Goku sacrifices himself and teleports himself and Cell to King Kai's planet to save the Earth. Thought, Sadly, Cell was able to survive.
  • Telepathically communicates with Gohan, giving him emotional support and assuring him of his strength, and assisting him in putting an end to Cell once and for all.
  • Upon meeting Goten, Goku plays with him by pretending he's an airplane.
  • Defeats Yakon, one of Babidi's top henchmen.
  • Condemns Vegeta for purposefully allowing himself to be taken over by Babidi in order to gain the power to stop Goku and abandoning the love for Bulma and Trunks.
  • Encourages Goten and Trunks not to give up and defeat Fat Buu.
  • Upon sensing Kid Buu's power, Goku urges Vegeta to put an end to their fight and work together to stop Buu from destroying the planet.
  • Convinces Vegeta to put aside their differences and fuse to stop Super Buu, managing to put him on the ropes while fused as Vegito.
  • While he did call the citizens of Satan City dumbasses, this was only because they were being incredibly uncooperative and refused to listen to a word he said.
  • With the assistance of the people of Earth, he defeats Kid Buu with a Super Spirit Bomb and puts an end to his mindless destruction.
  • Upon seeing Buu's mindless but not inherently evil nature and reflecting over the events, Goku asks for Kid Buu to be reborn, a wish that is granted by King Yemma and leads to the creation to Uub. This decision would have many unseen benefits and assist in many future struggles.
  • Tells Vegeta to spare Good Buu, understanding his innocent and child-like nature.
  • Uses the Dragon Balls to erase the memory of Good Buu from the Earthlings' minds in order to give Buu a chance to live a normal life.
  • While he does insult Uub's parents during his fight with him at the World Martial Arts Tournament, these were not genuine insults, as he only said these things to help Uub beat him in their fight and he later apologizes for this.

Dragon Ball Super[]

  • Saves Goten from falling to his death.
  • Fights Beerus, the God of Destruction, and prevents him from destroying the Earth.
  • Though he initially attempts to spare Frieza, when seeing his decision caused the Earth to be destroyed and given a second chance through Whis' Temporal Do-over, Goku kills Frieza before he can destroy the Earth, saving the planet and putting an end to Frieza's reign for a second time.
  • During the Tournament of Destroyers, when he fights Frost and quickly gaining the upper hand as a Super Saiyan, Goku asks Frost to bow out peacefully, not wanting to hurt him more than necessary. Then, upon his loss, accepts his defeat with grace.
  • Before his match with Hit begins, he respectfully bows to the assassin.
  • Tries to stop Champa from murdering his team after they lost.
  • Saves Vegeta's life by eliminating Fake Vegeta before Vegeta can fully disappear.
  • Assists Future Trunks and Vegeta in stopping Goku Black and Future Zamasu from eliminating all mortals across every timeline, putting an end to their omnicidal conquest.
  • While he vengefully attacked Zamasu, this is understandable due to him sadistically revealing he murdered Chi-Chi and Goten in cold blood, not to mention that he's Pure Evil and completely irredeemable beyond all reason.
  • Summoned Shenron to resurrect King Kai due to his requests, only being unable to do so due to getting distracted by Bulma and the others.
  • Though his decision to host the Tournament of Power ends up threatening the safety of the other universes, Goku feels guilty in endangering innocent lives and his carelessness. Plus, his decision also indirectly ends up saving those universes in the end as well.
  • When fighting Assassins from Universe 9, Goku scolds Frieza for killing them, choosing instead to merely knock the assassins out.
  • Even after having been nearly eradicated by Frieza's surprise attack with the Energy of Destruction, doesn't hold any resentment or bitterness towards Frieza for his underhanded trick, convincing Beerus to give him another chance.
  • Saves Hit from Dyspo and K'nsi tag-teaming him.
  • During the Tournament of Power, despite being enemies, helps Caulifla develop as a fighter, teaching her how to best use her Super Saiyan forms and hone her fighting style.
  • Saves Android 18 from being devoured by Anilaza.
  • Intended to use Vegeta's wish to bring back the erased universes's after Vegeta was eliminated by Jiren.
  • Puts his hatred with Frieza aside to defeat Jiren, working together and sacrificing themselves out of the ring to defeat him.
  • Honored his deal with Frieza and allowed Whis to resurrect him, even after Frieza revealed he wouldn't stop his evil ways.
  • When fighting Broly, he's able to sense that he isn't a truly bad person, telling Broly that he has the option to stop fighting and attempts to settle things peacefully.
  • As a part of Gogeta with Vegeta, he chooses to spare Frieza after the fight with Broly is over.
  • When Broly is teleported back to Vampa via Shenron, Goku goes to Vampa to give Broly, Cheelai and Lemo shelter, supplies and Senzu Beans, offering to spar with Broly and creating a friendship between the two of them.
  • During his training with Merus, explains that the reason he spares villains is because he values their lives and that should they rise up again, he'd fight them as many times as it took and expressing hope that during those repeated battles, they would finally have a change of heart and redeem themselves.
  • Saves the Z Fighters from being killed by Saganbo.
  • As he fights with Saganbo, Moro's top henchman, when the evil wizard pumps more energy that his body can handle, Goku demands that Moro stop, going so far as to attack Moro in order to prevent him from going any further.
  • After Saganbo's death, he expresses disgust at the way Moro so casually killed one of his friends.
  • When Merus sacrifices himself, Goku is not enraged at his death, instead reflecting on Merus' desire to protect the universe and vowing to honor his memory by protecting the Earth and maintaining peace.
  • When Moro asks to be spared, Goku gives him a Senzu Bean and chooses to spare his life so long as he goes back to the Galactic Prison and promises never to break out.
    • Even after Moro predictably goes back on his word and attempts to launch another sneak-attack, Goku patiently talks with him, expressing his admiration of his remarkable strength and nothing he'd be an even stronger adversary if he trained more. He then offers Moro one more chance to return to prison peacefully, only choosing to end his life when there was clearly no other option and to preserve the peace, he promised Merus he'd maintain.
  • With the assistance of Vegeta, Uub, and the rest of the Z-Fighters, Goku kills Moro, finally putting an end to his universal rampage of destruction.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Despite mostly outgrowing his lethality, he still threatened to blast the Supreme Kai Shin so he'd let him fight Vegeta (which in turn put both Beerus and Whis in risk of dying).
  • While it's unintentional and he is usually remorseful for it, he has too many careless moments with serious consequences, such as:
    • Refusing to listen to King Kai about ending his fight with Frieza while Planet Namek was exploding, and while somewhat understandable considering how Frieza killed Krillin, this nearly got Goku killed.
    • Showing willingness to jeopardize the world on occasion if it means having a good fight, acting recklessly and endangering the safety of the entire multiverse with his suggestion of a tournament with the 8 weaker universes. Although, this did have positive results as it allowed the chance for one of the universes to avoid erasure by Zeno, and it eventually led to the two Zeno's choosing to spare the weaker universes, making this a minor prevention.
    • Irresponsibly allowing Gohan, his own son who was still a child at the time, to fight Cell, even giving Cell a Senzu Bean merely to even the odds of the fight, despite regretting it afterward.
    • While he does care about his friends and family, he can still be neglectful towards them for the sake of training, such as when he abandons them to train Uub in End of Z without their approval, which understandably upsets them, with the only exceptions being with Trunks and Goten.
    • Forgetting to bring the seal to trap Zamasu with the Evil Containment Wave.

Trivia[]

  • Goku was initially removed from this wiki and approved as Pure Good, but he was automatically put back here due to his moments of incompetence and occasional lethality being too serious. In addition, he also tends to hold himself back from far much dangerous foes such as Cell, Frieza and Goku Black/Future Zamasu, all three who are Pure Evil.
  • The implication on why Goku made some detrimental mistakes during the Buu Saga and Super was the idea of how his perception of life and death changed when Cell killed him, some may say it's part of his Saiyan blood as with what happened in his fight against Frieza, however during his development of the Android, he encourages Gohan to end Cell, so that he wouldn't make the same potential errors he has done, but when he returns into the Afterlife, he's not bothered over people getting killed by Buu like he had been with the previous villains, with similar situations going about in Super.
  • In the original manga, Goku doesn't get severely prevented from being Pure Good, but in the Super Manga, he has high moments of apathy, when Future Chi Chi and Goten were killed by Zamasu, he expressed how much of nuisance they were, which is the total opposite of what happens in the anime.
