Hey, Anguirus, come on! There's a lot of trouble ahead! Let's hurry!
~ Godzilla to Anguirus.

Godzilla, also known as Gojira, is the main protagonist of the Showa series of Godzilla movies. Coming from the same species of the original Godzilla that attacked Tokyo in 1954, this one eventually redeemed himself and turned in a heroic monster who protected the world from various threats, while allying with other good-intentioned monsters, such as Mothra, Rodan, etc.

In 12 movies, he was portrayed by the late Haruo Nakajima, Katsumi Tezuka for stunts in 3 movies, Shinji Takagi in Godzilla vs. Megalon, the late Seiji Onaka and Hiroshi Sekita in Son of Godzilla, Isao Zushi in Zone Fighter and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and the late Toru Kawai in Terror of Mechagodzilla.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • This Godzilla is not an anti-hero at all.
  • Even though he was initially reluctant to embrace heroism and alter his behavior, he eventually decided to become a hero and abandon his villainous ways after a conversation with Mothra, and upon giving in to his true identity, he took on the role of Earth's protector, accepting his status as a genuine hero.
  • While he initially had corrupting qualities at first, he subverts all of these by the time of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and becomes much more heroic, protective, and kind, showing care for humanity while also being more than willing to ally and partner himself with other heroic monsters when needed, such as Jet Jaguar, King Caesar, and Zone Fighter.
  • He generally refuses to kill unless it's absolutely necessary and only does this to people who truly need to be killed, like Hedorah and Mechagodzilla.
    • He also usually gives his enemies a chance to retreat which shows that he isn't merciless.
  • He clearly has no moral agency issues due to showing many actions and emotions that set up his personality and morals.
  • He is a loving and caring father to Minilla and ensures that he never mistreats or abuses him again like he did before.
  • He always helps out his friends without a second thought and has saved them from threats on multiple occasions, like saving Anguirus from Gigan, saving Rodan and Mothra from King Ghidorah, saving Jet Jaguar from Gigan and Megalon, saving King Caesar from Mechagodzilla, saving Zone Fighter from the Terror Beasts, and saving Gorosaurus and Kumonga from Ghidorah.
  • He shows no malicious or destructive behavior and the only times he wreaks havoc is when he's mind controlled.
    • Even when he was a villain, it was suggested that he never had any true malicious intent but was only reacting to constantly being attacked by humans as he says he only "hates humans because they hate him" in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster.
  • When other monsters have abandoned their evil ways or are no longer evil, he is open to making amends with them, as demonstrated by his friendship with Anguirus and Kumonga, both of whom previously used to be his enemies.
  • He never holds any grudges against humans, and is now on good terms with them as he has accepted them as his allies and consciously chooses to protect them from anyone who is a threat to them.
  • He is protective towards both monsters and humans.
  • In terms of admirable standards, he easily passes due to saving the world and humanity countless times and stopping genocide several times, and while Zone Fighter saved the universe from Baron Garoga, Godzilla played a crucial role in the process and Zone Fighter could not have accomplished it without him.
  • Unlike most versions of Godzilla, he has very few corrupting qualities and subverts nearly all of them as the story goes on.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster[]

  • Although they initially refused to help, he and Rodan eventually came to aid Mothra when she was being beaten up by King Ghidorah.
  • He carries Mothra up Mount Fuji so they can rescue Rodan and defeat Ghidorah together.
  • He saves Rodan from Ghidorah's gravity beams by continually throwing rocks at Ghidorah.
  • He willingly works and cooperates with Rodan and Mothra to stop Ghidorah from destroying the planet.
  • After the three manage to overwhelm Ghidorah, they send him retreating and end up saving Earth from his destruction.

Invasion of the Astro-Monster[]

  • On Planet X, he sides with Rodan to defeat Ghidorah a second time and drives the three-headed dragon away.
  • While he temporarily gets mind controlled into wreaking havoc across Japan, him and Rodan eventually get freed from their control and go against the Xiliens.
  • Upon being freed from the Xiliens' control, he wakes up Rodan and joins forces with him with face off against King Ghidorah once more.
  • He saves Rodan from Ghidorah by grabbing Ghidorah's two tails, restraining him and preventing him from firing anymore gravity beams.
  • Working with Rodan, he rams into Ghidorah, sending Ghidorah, albeit him and Rodan as well, into the sea and ending his destruction.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep[]

  • He fights and defeats Ebirah which allows Ryota to rescue his brother Yata.
  • He destroys the Red Bamboo's base and causes the terrorist organization's hideout to collapse.
  • He defeats Ebirah and sends him retreating in their second encounter, saving the island natives which allows them to escape.

Son of Godzilla[]

  • He defeated two of the Kamacuras and stopped them from killing Minilla, later adopting the latter.
  • He starts to look after Minilla and begins to raise him like his own child and teach him to inherit his responsibilities.
  • While it's true, that he was a bit rough to Minilla at first, he starts to care more about him as shown when he congratulatory patted him on the head, grows more close to him and later embraced him in the snow. He also doesn't mistreat Minilla again by the end of the film.
    • Him abusing Minilla in "All Monsters Attack" should not count since it all takes place inside the dreams of a kid.
  • He came to rescue Minilla from Kumonga and helped him finish the spider off.
  • When a terrible snow storm fell upon the island Godzilla and Minilla were in, Godzilla refused to leave his son behind and hugs him, using his body heat to save him, and both enter in a hibernation state.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah[]

  • After being attracted by the presence of Hedorah, a deadly smog monster composed of pollution, he battled him near a harbor as the creature attempted to consume smoke from a stack.
  • After Hedorah fled, he attempted to reason with him and tried to resolve the situation peacefully without any violence or engaging in combat.
  • After seeing that Hedorah will not stop his malicious deeds, he does his best to defeat Hedorah, eventually forcing him to flee back to the sea.
  • Determined to prevent further destruction and atrocities, he pursues Hedorah to stop him from causing any harm.
  • When Hedorah emerged on land with a new flying shape in daylight, Godzilla tries his best to stop his chaos, despite failing.
  • He continues chasing after Hedorah, with the intent of putting an end to his destructive behavior and ensuring the safety of everyone.
  • After the JSDF save his life from Hedorah, Godzilla allies himself with the JSDF and uses his atomic breath to power the Giant Electrode. As a result, Hedorah is left shriveled up and lifeless.
  • He removes two white orbs from Hedorah's body and then dries them out with the electrode.
  • After a second Hedorah appears, Godzilla utilizes his atomic breath as a means of propulsion to launch himself airborne in pursuit of Hedorah, leading to a midair collision and Godzilla subduing Hedorah.
  • He restrains Hedorah and returns him to the electrode, dehydrating him once more to end his rampage.
  • In the end, he ripped Hedorah apart and desiccated each piece of him until Hedorah disintegrated into dust.
  • With Hedorah gone and his rampage finally put to an end, he decided to leave the humans alone in peace, releasing and letting go of all grudges he had towards them, ultimately embracing them as genuine allies.
  • From this film onward, he gets rid of almost all of his corrupting qualities and becomes a full fledged heroic defender.

Godzilla vs. Gigan[]

  • While being alerted of the Nebulans' plans to dominate Earth, he sends Anguirus to travel to Japan to see if anything dangerous was happening.
  • After Anguirus tells him about the chaos, he departs from Monster Island to save Tokyo from King Ghidorah and Gigan.
  • Upon arriving in Tokyo, he does his best to defeat Ghidorah and Gigan, alongside Anguirus.
  • He helps Anguirus take on Gigan when he couldn't handle him on his own.
  • In a weakened and delivered state, he still found the strength to get back onto his feet and take down the Godzilla Tower controlled by the M Space Hunter Nebula Aliens, destroying their base.
  • He regroups with Anguirus and is able to rescue his friend from Ghidorah and Gigan.
  • He devises a strategy to send Ghidorah and Gigan fleeing, resulting in him dealing with Gigan, then holding Ghidorah still while Anguirus uses his spiked carapace to attack Ghidorah, forcing both monsters to retreat to space.
  • After defending the planet from alien threats, him and Anguirus swam back to Monster Island.

Godzilla vs. Megalon[]

  • When Jet Jaguar flies to Monster Island to tell him that Megalon is attacking Japan and that he needs his help, he agrees to help him and swims to Japan as fast as he can to save the surface world from Megalon.
  • Despite arriving late, he wasted no time in defending Jet Jaguar and fighting off Gigan and Megalon, giving Jet Jaguar time to recover.
  • He defeats Gigan and makes him temporarily fly away.
  • He confronts Megalon by himself, managing to momentarily beat him before focusing his attention on Gigan.
  • He saved Jet Jaguar's life when Gigan held him hostage by blasting Gigan with his atomic breath and rushed to rescue the rhino.
  • He pulled Jet Jaguar out of the ground in time as Megalon surrounds them with his napalm fire, rescuing him in the process.
  • After him and Jet Jaguar escaped from the fire, he fought both Gigan and Megalon until he got Gigan to fly away and had Megalon temporarily trying to flee.
  • After a lengthy battle, him and Jet Jaguar managed to beat Gigan and had him retreating back to space.
  • Him and Jet Jaguar defeat Megalon and send him retreating back to Seatopia and leading to the Seatopians closing the underground.
  • After the long drawn-out fight, him and Jet Jaguar shake hands, remembering each other as allies before departing.

Zone Fighter[]

  • When Zone Fighter was in trouble fighting Wargilgar and Spyler, he quickly rushed to help.
  • Working together, Godzilla used his atomic breath to defeat Wargilgar, and Zone Fighter defeated Spyler with his Meteor Missile Might technique. Following their victories, him and Zone Fighter shared a handshake, solidifying their bond as comrades.
  • When the Zone Family called for Godzilla's help once more when Zone Fighter was about to get crushed to death by the Garoga, he swiftly rushed to help without hesitation.
  • In order to save Zone, he engaged in a battle with his old foe Gigan, who was dispatched by the Garoga, triumphing over him. He then went on to rescue Zone Fighter, who later faced off against Gigan on his own.
  • During a string of seismic events in Japan triggered by the terrifying creature Zandolla, Godzilla once again stepped in to save the day.
  • He took part in the battle against Zandolla, which resulted in a battle that caused the ground to crack open and release Zone Fighter.
  • Together, he and Zone Fighter used their combined efforts to overcome Zandolla, which ends in Zone Fighter skillfully utilizing his proton beam to vanquish their foe.
  • Following the fierce confrontation, him and Zone Fighter found their friendship deepening.
    • Zone Fighter went as far as creating a cave for Godzilla to reside in and Godzilla accepted the offer.
    • They frequently practiced and trained in combat together to push their limits and enhance their abilities in preparation for the Garogas' upcoming attack.
  • He came to aid Zone Fighter and promptly engaged in battle when he faced trouble from Jellar.
  • He defeats Jellar and stops him from causing any more trouble or damage, which at the same time results in the sudden appearance of a previously unknown creature called Kastam-Jellar who he is determined to stop.
  • Initially faced with difficulties, him and Zone Fighter overcame their enemies with their strength replenished and by working together and combining Godzilla's atomic breath with Zone Fighter's Meteor Missile Might, which boosted their strength.
  • He single-handedly battled Garoborg and Spider Uros in order to protect Japan from them.
  • Assisted by Zone Fighter, he was able to defeat the two monsters and save Japan from the threats. Garoborg was defeated by Zone Fighter using his powerful Meteor Missile Might, and Spider Uros was taken down by a combination of Zone Fighter's Meteor Proton Beam and Godzilla's Atomic Breath.
  • He bid farewell to the Zone Family as they departed for retirement, waving goodbye to them in a gesture of respect.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla[]

  • After being warned by Anguirus that there's someone evil who's impersonating him, he went to Tokyo to investigate and defeat his imposter.
  • After the second Godzilla revealed himself to be Mechagodzilla in disguise, he tried to stop his robotic counterpart from destroying Tokyo and succeeded in driving him away, albeit despite getting heavily wounded and falling in the ocean.
  • He arrived in Okinawa in good time to defend King Caesar from Mechagodzilla which gave him enough time to get back into the battle.
  • He showed visible remorse and regret after accidentally blasting King Caesar with his atomic breath.
  • He protected and shielded King Caesar from Mechagodzilla's multiple ranged attacks, and tried helping him when he fell to the ground.
  • When King Caesar was temporarily defeated, he tried protecting King Caesar and went to take on Mechagodzilla by himself.
  • After getting magnetic powers and using it to overcome Mechagodzilla, he restrains his doppelgänger from behind and cooperates with King Caesar to attack it.
  • After defeating Mechagodzilla by working and cooperating with King Caesar, he emerged from the water after tumbling into the ocean from the explosion and started to swim off, while King Caesar headed back to rest within the rocky face of a cliff.

Terror of Mechagodzilla[]

  • When Dr. Mafune released Titanosaurus in Tokyo, he promptly appeared to protect the city and stop him.
  • He succeeded in defending Tokyo for most of the part and lets Titanosaurus retreat after he is no longer mind controlled.
  • He came back to confront Titanosaurus and the newly built Mechagodzilla in order to prevent them from inflicting any further damage or danger on mankind.
  • Despite his failure, he made a valiant effort to overcome Mechagodzilla and Titanosaurus.
  • With help from the JSDF, he is able to defeat his mechanical doppelgänger once and for all, and destroy the Black Hole Planet 3 Alien UFO.
  • Even though he did attack Titanosaurus afterward, it could be justified since he still believed he was evil and had no idea Titanosaurus wasn't being mind controlled anymore. It is also likely he only knocks him out and doesn't kill him.

Destroy All Monsters[]

  • While he is temporarily mind controlled again and used to wreak havoc on multiple cities, he and the other monsters later break free from the Kilaaks' mind control and turn against them.
  • Once free from their control, he guided the other monsters of Earth to the Kilaaks' base on Mt. Fuji to thwart their plan for world domination.
  • He saves his son and his friends from Ghidorah by restraining the three-headed dragon from behind and letting Mothra and Kumonga web him up.
  • To buy Anguirus some time to recover, him and Gorosaurus fight Ghidorah on their own and let Anguirus prepare for a sneak attack on Ghidorah.
  • Him and Anguirus distract Ghidorah long enough to let Gorosaurus sneak behind Ghidorah and powerfully kick him down to the ground.
  • In a united effort with the other monsters, he ultimately vanquishes King Ghidorah and secures victory over the enemy, ending him permanently.
  • He tried to save Rodan, his son, and his friends from a flaming UFO dubbed the "Fire Dragon" released by the Kilaaks.
  • On his own, he destroys the Kilaaks' base, preventing their plans of world domination and making their defeat permanent.
  • With the Earth finally saved at last, he goes back to Monsterland in order to spend the rest of his days in peace with Earth's other monsters.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Despite getting rid of most of his corrupting qualities, he has some moments of showing brutality, and even some lethality while fighting, most notably when him and the other monsters beat King Ghidorah down and continued to beat him up, basically beating him until he died. But to be fair, he pretty much deserved every ounce of pain after everything he's done. He also broke Megalon's legs, ripped off Ebirah's claws, punched into one of Hedorah's eyes and ripped out his organs, tore off one of Jellar's limbs, and twisted Mechagodzilla's head twice, but since all of these moments are either out of self-defense or him being a righteous killer, as well as the fact that he doesn't show any sadism while doing any of these, it is a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • He and Anguirus are the only Showa era heroes to be Near Pure Good.
  • He is the only version of Godzilla to be Near Pure Good, whereas his other heroic counterparts are too inconsistent and anti-heroic to be considered NPG.
  • He was originally on Inconsistently Admirable wiki as he was thought to be too much of a jerk and a hero by proxy. However, it was decided that he got rid of his corrupting qualities and his demeaning ones were minor, so he was approved Near Pure Good.
  • There is a fan thoery that Godzilla seen from Destroy all Monsters to Terror of MechaGodzilla (Which continuity wise would be Godzilla vs Hedorah to Destroy all Monsters) is actually a grown up Minilla. Even if this was confirmed the showa Godzilla would still be on his wiki because he had two Goodness Zones, saving humanity from alien threats and saving Minilla from freezing to death.
