Gene Meh is the main protagonist of the Sony animated feature film The Emoji Movie. He is a Meh Emoji with a malfunction that allows him to make more than one face, something he inherited from his father.
When his malfunction causes him to be the first emoji to make the wrong face after getting sent as a message, he is branded as a fugitive that must be deleted by the tyrannical leader of the emojis, Smiler. This sends him journey to leave the phone in the cloud so he can reprogram himself into a normal meh.
He is voiced by TJ Miller.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Although his malfunction appears to hinder him socially, he always tries to connect with his fellow emojis in a friendly manner.
- While he ran away from Smiler after he made the wrong face when being scanned, it was only because she was threatening to delete him, and he actively tried to find another way to fix himself afterwards.
- He immediately admitted to Hi-5 that the reason Smiler's bots were chasing them was because of himself, and not Hi-5 sneaking into the VIP section of the phone.
- He helped Jailbreak dance her way to the end of the Just Dance app when she was struggling.
- When Hi-5 was deleted with the app, he went out of his way to save him from the trash on the phone.
- Although he didn't rescue any of the other deleted characters, it was only because doing so wasn’t feasible given the situation.
- He actively put himself in harm's way by guessing the password to leave the phone, being blasted every time he got it wrong.
- He saved everyone on the phone from deletion by using his multiple facial expressions to give Alex relationship advice about connecting with his crush, Addie.
- His actions brought an end to the unfair class divisions between emojis put in place by Smiler.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- His mistake of making the wrong face when he was chosen almost led to the entire phone being wiped, meaning he qualifies as Minor Incompetent. While it could be argued that this wasn’t something he could control due to his malfunction, the malfunction doesn't prevent him from making a meh face on command. He only got it wrong because he had a nervous breakdown after being chosen by Alex.
