Gaara is a major supporting character of the Naruto franchise. He was one of the main antagonists of the Chunin Saga (alongside Orochimaru) until Naruto helped him realize that he was not alone. He then became the Fifth Kazekage of the Sand Village and decided to rule over it as a wise and capable leader to make up for his atrocities against the village in his childhood.
He is voiced by Akira Ishida in Japanese, who also voiced Kaworu Nagisa and Makoto Yuki, and by Liam O'Brien in English.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite the village ill-treating him due to being Shukaku's host, Gaara was a gentle kid before being manipulated by his father into killing Yashamaru.
- Despite his violence and ruthlessness in the earlier arcs, he redeemed himself with the help of Naruto and apologized to his siblings for his abusive behavior.
- When Tsunade requested for help to retrieve Sasuke, Gaara alongside Kankuro and Temari immediately jumped to the call due to having personal experience of being manipulated by Orochimaru.
- When Kimimaro was about to finish Rock Lee, Gaara saved him from his attack — a notable deed since he was the one who crippled the latter that only Tsunade who could undo the damage.
- Fought Kimimaro alongside Rock Lee to stop him from chasing Naruto.
- When Kimimaro died, Gaara sympathized with him by acknowledging that despite Orochimaru's lack of care for him, Kimimaro still saw him as a mentor figure.
- Ascended to the position of the Fifth Kazekage and decided to usher the Hidden Sand into peace after Orochimaru and Kabuto destabilized the village.
- When Deidara attacked the village, Gaara fought him to stop his rampage.
- Expended all his sand resources to stop Deidara from bombing the Hidden Sand.
- After Lady Chiyo sacrificed her life to revive him, Gaara didn't celebrate his own revival, rather he asked the assembled Shinobi to respect her passing.
- Attended the Five Kages meeting for a possible chance at peace.
- When Onoki berated the Kages for being soft towards the Akatsuki and spoke against forming an alliance due to several of the Kages formerly using Akatsuki's services, Gaara requested him to not lose himself.
- When Sasuke attacked the summit, Gaara tried to make him see reason, only to be rejected.
- When Tobi informed the Kages that Infinite Tsukoyomi is a technique that brainwashes the affected into living their best lives, Gaara tried to make him see reason that such a peace is false, and true peace is attained only due to hard work in the real world.
- While Gaara advocated for Naruto to kill Sasuke, it was only because Sasuke nearly tried to kill all the Kages due to their fight, and when Sasuke showed himself at the Fourth Great Ninja War as an ally, Gaara no longer desired to kill him anymore due to (supposedly) being reformed.
- Seeing the soldiers in the Shinobi alliance bicker amongst each other due to bad blood between the Great Nations, Gaara made a speech which united the Alliance against Akatsuki.
- Helped defeat the Second Mizukage and brought him peace against Kabuto's Edo Tensei.
- After defeating his father, Gaara made peace with him and forgave him for transferring Shukaku into him and making him kill Yashamaru, despite him ruining his childhood and contributing to his fall into villainy in the first place.
- Stopped Madara from completely destroying the Fourth Division by stopping a meteor.
- Aided the other Kage in fighting against Madara.
- After Shukaku was unsealed due to Obito's defeat, Gaara didn't hold any grudge towards him driving him towards madness due to sleep deprivation, and accepted him as a friend.
- He adopted an outcasted boy named Shinki, showing him love and teaching him to become a ninja, seemingly wanting to save him like how Naruto saved him from his loneliness.
- When the Otsutsuki clan members attack the Chunin exams, him and the other Kage help save the citizens. During the invasion, him and Chojuro helped fight against Urashiki, causing him to flee. He and the other kage would then save Naruto while he is tortuously having his bijuu chakra extracted by Momoshiki and Kinshiki, even managing to entrap both of them along with the other Kage.
- When he re-encounters Urashiki, he fights him alongside Sasuke and refuses to let Shinki and his friends get involved. When Boruto encountered them, he focused on protecting him while trying to defeat Urashiki.
- Alongside Naruto and unlike the other three kage, he feels that Kawaki deserves to be treated like a person and not outcasted.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite redeeming himself, Gaara is shown to be ruthless towards his enemies, for example, when Gaara crushed Deidara's arms despite being able to easily restrain him.
