GAIA is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Elisabet Sobeck) of the Horizon series.
A powerful, hyper-intelligent terraforming Artificial Intelligence created by the 21st-Century scientist and roboticist, Elisabet Sobeck, GAIA would later play a significantly major role in terraforming the sterile Earth in 2168 A.D., 100 years after the Faro Plague ravaged it completely, with the aid of its Subordinate Functions, and disabling the rogue machines completely.
However in 26th of August 3020, the initial copy of GAIA was bombarded with a powerful, mysterious signal coming from a Far Zenith AI in Sirius, known as Nemesis, causing its Subordinate Functions to become rogue, semi-sentient AIs. She is responsible for the creation of the Sobeck clone known as Aloy, in an attempt to save the world from mass-extinction perpetrated by the rogue AIs HADES and HEPHAESTUS.
She is voiced by Lesley Ewen.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
- After Earth went to the point of utter sterility in 2068 because of the Faro Plague, GAIA soon proceeded her job of terraforming Earth back from lifelessness, via the aid of her Subordinate Functions, centuries before the present-time events of the series. While the process is not shown, there are a lot of on-screen effects, as the multitude of effects of GAIA's terraformation is shown throughout the series.
- When HADES became rogue because of Nemesis' interference, GAIA willingly self-destructed herself by overloading GAIA Prime's reactor, thereby stopping the AI from taking over the terraforming system and using it to destroy Earth. Even though GAIA was unable to shut down HADES as soon as possible, after self-destructing her predecessor, it was enough to significantly deal a hammer blow to HADES' plans. Her efforts was what gave Aloy, in the future, the needed advantage to shut the AI down for good.
- Created Aloy inside ELEUTHIA-9 Brood-1 facility prior to her self-destruction, as means to stop HADES from awakening the Faro Plague. This means that GAIA is directly responsible for turning Aloy into the global protector and hero she is, leading to many of the heroics she has done over the course of the series.
Horizon Forbidden West[]
- After being rebooted, she proceeded to protect Aloy and the Base team from Far Zenith through the MINERVA subordinate function.
- Proceeded to assist Aloy in her endeavour to find AETHER, POSEIDON and DEMETER around the Forbidden West; as well as helping her and her team to stop HEPHAESTUS, Regalla's rebel army and the Far Zenith, all at once.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- She fails the in-story standards to Aloy, who saved the world thrice from HADES, HEPHAESTUS and Far Zenith with slightly lower resources than her. However, GAIA passes the series' baseline standards. This is due to the fact that she is directly responsible for Aloy's heroism, as she created her during HADES' attempted hijacking and subsequently her predecessor's self-destruction, which is a unique admirable act in the series, thus making this a minor prevention.
- Being an AI in the series, GAIA does have some moral agency issues. However, due to her being one of the most intelligent artificial intelligences created, even topping the rogue AI VAST SILVER's machine intelligence of 1.38T, this is a minor prevention. Examples included her self-destructing GAIA Prime during HADES' attempted attack that is beyond her own programming, rather than her programming dictating to do so.
