Fear is a major character in the Inside Out franchise. He is the purple emotion that embodies fear and one of Riley's primary emotions.
In the first film and Riley's First Date, he was voiced by Bill Hader. In Inside Out 2, he is voiced by Tony Hale.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He always strives to keep Riley safe and protected from any harm whatsoever as she grows up.
Inside Out[]
- After moving, he tried to help Riley fit in and made a list of potential disasters.
- He and the other emotions agreed to let Joy do her job and give Riley reasons to be happy after her mother talked to her regarding her father's worries.
- When Sadness converted a happy memory into a sad one, he and the other emotions tried to fix it and later tried to prevent her from touching more memories while Riley was introducing herself.
- When Joy and Sadness were sucked into the subconscious, he tried to pretend to be Joy in front of Riley's parents in order to keep the promise of still smiling.
- He tried to get Riley to be happy again and keep her from quitting hockey by using some happy memories to supplant the Core Memories and it even worked at first. After it began failing, he tried to keep the memories in before being launched off towards the window.
- He took shifts in Dream Duty to cover for Joy even if it meant getting exposed to nightmares.
- When Anger proposed the idea of running away, he was initially against it and tried to get him to think about it rationally instead of making an impulse decision. Though he did ultimately agree to use the idea, he was extremely nervous throughout the whole thing, considered going back several times, and was the first one to regret it.
- After Joy and Sadness came back he tried to find ways to break the window to let them inside of Headquarters.
- He helped make new Core Memories that were mixed with emotions.
Inside Out 2[]
- He continued to take his job very seriously, especially while Riley played hockey.
- After Riley's Sense of Self manifested and Joy installed a system to be able to send bad memories away, Fear helped with it and also helped choose which memories were sent down to the sense of self to spawn new beliefs.
- After the console was seemingly broken, he and the others agreed to not use it unless necessary so as to not cause any overreactions on Riley's part; Fear briefly taking control when Riley kept awkwardly holding Val’s hands.
- When the other emotions began manifesting, despite being initially apprehensive, he was the first one to be more accepting of them, telling Anxiety they'd get along well.
- When Anxiety sent Riley's Sense of Self to the subconscious, he and the others tried to prevent her from going down to make new beliefs before being restrained by Embarrassment.
- After escaping from the Secret Vault, he and the others headed off to the subconscious to get Riley's Sense of Self back.
- While he was very pessimistic and he and the others belittled Joy's attempts to remain positive, after she snapped, he helped cheer her up and supported her more.
- When the group reached Imagination Land, he helped combat Anxiety's ideas by sending positive messages and helping the Mind Workers stand up to her.
- After getting caught in a brainstorm, he tried to help break ideas before they reached Riley and later tried to grab on to some to go back to Headquarters, saving Disgust from falling when she failed.
- After the emotions fell off from the idea tube, he saved them all by having them hold on to him and using his parachute to prevent them from falling to their deaths.
- He helped call for Pouchy and later helped set up the dynamite so they could use the memory avalanche to go back to Headquarters through the subconscious flow.
- After getting back, he tried to help the other emotions by taking out the new Sense of Self Anxiety had made in an attempt to stop Riley's anxiety attack.
- He and the other emotions chose to let Riley be herself and embraced her true Sense of Self made from all her memories, both good and bad.
- He forgave the other emotions and accepted them into Headquarters.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He has some small jerkish moments throughout both films.
- In the first film, he tried to quit after giving up hope on getting Riley to be happy again and was fully ready to leave his friends and responsibility as an emotion.
- When the main emotions were stuck in the subconscious, he was constantly belittling Joy's attempts to fix things and keep everyone positive, constantly comparing her to Anxiety and talking about how she could do everything better.
