~ Doc Brown’s Famous Catchphrase |
Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown is the deuteragonist of the Back to the Future franchise. He is a mad scientist, with rather quirky and emotional manners and very kind. He invented the flux capacitor, that makes time travel possible, and built a time machine out of a DeLorean car. Despite its ingenuity, his invention caused many problems and often changed the History of Hill Valley, the film's setting.
He is the best friend of Marty McFly (who calls him "Doc") whom he took on many adventures by accident, and despite their completely opposed personalities, they make a great time-traveling team.
He was portrayed by Christopher Lloyd in the movies. He was played by Christopher Lloyd in the live-action segments of Back to the Future: The Animated Series, while he was voiced by Dan Castellaneta.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He is friendly to Marty McFly.
- While he is a mad scientist, his experimentation isn’t unethical.
- He built a time machine to save humanity. When he realized the potential danger of using it, he decided to destroy it, and while he did build another one, he did it because he wanted to meet his friend and make sure he was okay. He also did not want to abandon his dog to the mercy of fate.
Back to the Future[]
- While he did steal Plutonium from terrorists for somewhat selfish reasons and this act was undeniably reckless, his goals were more peaceful than theirs, as he wanted to build a time machine, and they wanted to commit a crime with an untold amount of victims.
- When the terrorists find him, he attempts to stop them and even lets them kill him to prevent them from killing Marty, and while he did put on a bulletproof vest in another timeline, it was done to protect himself.
- While his 1955 version didn’t initially believe Marty came from the future, he later helped him return home.
- While he was somewhat argumentative to Marty when he didn’t want to listen to his warning that he would be killed in the future, he later nevertheless listened to it, since he, as mentioned above, was wearing a bulletproof vest.
- He willingly took multiple bullets to the chest to ensure the timeline stayed intact.
Back to the Future 2[]
- He takes Marty to save his future children from prison.
- While he did put to sleep Jennifer, it’s because he had to do it.
- He scolds Marty for his reckless action of buying an almanac.
- When he realizes what happened in the alternative 1985 and how it happened, he finds Marty and tells him what he knows.
- He saves Marty from being killed by Biff Tannen twice.
- He goes with Marty in 1955 to help him to correct his mistakes.
- He advises Marty to burn the almanac.
Back to the Future 3[]
- While he did shoe the horse poorly, it’s because Buford Tannen didn’t pay him.
- He saved Clara Clayton twice.
- When Marty must fight Buford, and Emmet is held hostage, he attempts to sacrifice himself so Marty can escape.
- He returns in 1985 to see Marty and gifts him their photograph.
- He tells Jennifer that she and Marty’s future isn’t yet written, which means their future depends on their actions, and advises them to have a good future.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He steals a train in the third installment. While it was necessary to return to 1985 from 1885, he caused inconvenience to the passengers of this train, not to mention the fact that it is unknown who, where, and why was traveling on this train and what could depend on it.
