Edward Newgate, or more famously known as Whitebeard is a major character of One Piece. He was the captain of Whitebeard Pirates till his death, and one of the Four Emperors who ruled over the New World alongside Big Mom, Kaido and Shanks. He was also the member of Rocks Pirates alongside Big Mom and Kaido. He was also the one who saved Monkey D. Dragon 38 years ago.
He was voiced by the late Kinryu Arimoto and Ryuzaburo Otomo in Japanese and by R. Bruce Elliot in the English dub.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite growing up in poverty, he didn't let it discourage him from pursuing his dreams.
- Disliked the Rocks Pirates due to some of the members' cruel disposition, only staying losing a Davy Back Fight to Rocks D. Xebec and being forced to join his crew, and left the crew after his defeat.
- He called himself a friend of Shakky, which is his reason to save her.
- Although it was unintentional, Whitebeard saved Monkey D. Dragon (the son of Garp and Luffy's father) from getting killed by St. Satchels Maffey (one of the Holy Knights).
- He helped Rocks fight Imu even though he had nothing to gain by doing so, wishing to pay back his debt. This is even after the whole crew, save for him, Kaido and Big Mom, fleed with the treasures and betrayed Rocks.
- Formed his own pirate group, Whitebeard Pirates, so that he could experience the feeling of being in a family.
- According to Marco, he adopted many of the crewmates as his own children who were orphaned and had nowhere to go, thus dissuading them from the sense of loneliness.
- He treated his crewmates equally, considering Ace to be no different to Squard, as the former is the son of Gol D. Roger who murdered the former crew of the latter.
- When Fishman Island was getting attacked by slavers wanting to kidnap Fishmen and mermaids, Whitebeard single-handedly put a stop to that by proclaiming the island as his territory. He would do so with many islands and countries too poor for paying the Heavenly Tribute, protecting the citizens from other pirate's.
- After ascending to become an Emperor, Whitebeard invested his earnings in his village, lifting it out of poverty and improving the lives of its people.
- Only tried to prevent Oden from joining in his crew due to his position as heir-apparent to Wano, letting him join after Oden proved his grit and his good heart by helping Toki from her enemies.
- Despite being rivals to Gol D. Roger, he encouraged a healthy rivalry between Roger Pirates and Whitebeard Pirates to avoid bloodshed.
- Let Oden join the Roger Pirates due to Oden requesting him, and wished him well on his journey.
- Accepted Roger's request for a final meeting and learned the truth of the Void Century and Will of D. from him.
- Made alliances with several pirates, most notably Squard and Jinbe, and helped them with their situations.
- Accepted Ace into his crew despite Ace trying to kill him, and welcomed him as his son.
- He accepted Ace's heritage as Roger's son, telling Ace that he couldn't care less of it and that his transgressions were with his father not him.
- When Blackbeard killed Thatch for his Devil Fruit and escaped, Whitebeard tried to forbid Ace from pursuing him as he sensed something wrong with Blackbeard.
- After Shanks decided to stop Ace from chasing Blackbeard, Whitebeard lied to him that he ordered Ace to catch him, protecting his honor.
- When news of Ace's impending execution reached him, he summoned all his allied pirates to attack Marineford to save him.
- Whitebeard humored Buggy by appealing to his pride to gain his support, despite having no real need to do so.
- Forgave Squard even when he stabbed him due to considering him a son, changing Squard's opinions towards him and making him into an ally again.
- After seeing his potential, Whitebeard had his crew help Luffy sneak up to Ace so that he could free him.
- After Ace was freed, Whitebeard decided to stay behind and sacrifice himself so that the Marines will be focused on him and not the escaping pirates.
- Tried to dissuade Ace from pursuing revenge when Akainu badmouthed him and was horrified and saddened when Ace saved Luffy from Akainu by sacrificing himself.
- He viciously attacked Akainu for killing Ace, while at the same time protecting Luffy.
- He voiced a desire to avenge Thatch by killing Blackbeard.
- Despite endangering the world by proclaiming that the One Piece exists, he only did it so that the truth of the world for which the World Government was committing its numerous atrocities gets revealed.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Posed a harsh challenge to Kozuki Oden by forcing him to hang from his chains for 3 days, which Oden failed, if only to save Toki.
- Is lethal to both the Marines and his own crew as he used his Devil Fruit to bring Marineford to near-destruction. But he only did this because he wanted them to dissuade from killing Ace, making this a minor prevention.
- While he did it for the heroic motivation of revealing the World Government's atrocities, him proclaiming the One Piece exists would result in increased piracy, and thus crime that he did not consider.
Trivia[]
- Whitebeard's second voice actor, Ryuzaburo Otomo, also voices Crocodile in the same series, who is ironically Near Pure Evil. Additonally, Crocodile was among the many who wanted Newgate's head.
