Edward Elric is the titular main protagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise. After losing his right arm and left leg in a failed Human Transmutation, along with Alphonse who lost his entire body, Ed and his armored brother set on a journey to recover both of their bodies. Later on, he becomes the youngest State Alchemist in history, achieving his certificate at the age of twelve.
He is voiced by Romi Park in the Japanese version, and by Vic Mignogna in the English version.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- When Alphonse lost his body after the failed Human Transmutation, he performs another Human Transmutation and sacrifices his arm to bring Al's soul back.
- Is deeply sorrowful by what he has done to his brother. After Roy's persuasive words to him that the State Alchemist program may help him restore their bodies back, he is driven by guilt for what he has done to his brother and decides to join to restore what they'd lost.
- When told that the autogain surgery would be excruciating and that recovery would take at least three years, he commented saying that the pain would be nothing compared to Alphonse's suffering and promised to finish recovery in a single year.
- Exposes the Priest Cornello as a fraud and reveals his plans to fool the people of Reole for his own militaristic goals.
- He and his brother inform a distraught Rosé that she is able to move on from her faith as long as she has two legs and the truth.
- When the town of Yuoswell is being run by a corrupt Lieutenant Yoki who has been harassing the citizens for taxes, he manages to swindle ownership of the town and its mines away from Yoki and transfer it to the grateful citizens.
- Thwarted a train hijacking.
- Is furious and disgusted at Shou Tucker for using his own daughter and dog to create a chimera capable of human speech, all in order to keep his State Alchemist license.
- Offers himself as a sacrifice to Scar, all in order to make sure he spares his brother.
- Even after Marcoh warned him to not go after the Philosopher's Stone, he was determined to go after it, which sways Marcoh and allows him to have a note to the location of his research.
- He and his brother compensate for Sheska's help on writing down all the coded burnt records by deciphering the code.

- Refuses to kill the Slicer brothers, who are serial killers, and considers them human (they disembodied souls in armor) since his own brother is human too, and he's horrified when they are destroyed by Envy and Lust.
- Reassures Alphonse - who had been coaxed into doubting that his memories of a human were genuine.
- Helps Winry out in delivering a baby.
- When he hears from Sig Curtis, that they can no longer address Izumi as their superior but rather as colleagues. He realizes his mistake, rushes back to Izumi's house and demands that she help them restore his bodies.
- When he learns that Alphonse has been kidnapped by Greed, he goes to his base alone attempting to rescue his brother.
- Despite Ling sending his bodyguards after him, he allowed him to tag along with them.
- Explains the situation regarding Maes' death to Gracia, apologizes for drawing her husband into such a dangerous situation.
- Is heartened by Gracia's words, when she tells them that her husband would want them to continue their journey and them not continuing their journey would render Hughes' death meaningless.
- Checks on Winry after Hughes' death and talks with her as she grieves the death of Hughes
- Reflects on Gracia's words, and declares that though he cannot give up the promise that Al and him made to each other and though he is one human being only capable of doing so much, he will do his best into making sure that no one else will be a casualty in their journey.

- Calls Izumi to inform her of his finding and asks her to confirm whether the baby she had transmuted had been her child, she then discovers that the child she had transmuted was not her baby and thanks him for releasing her from the guilt of causing her child's death the second time.
- Repairs Al's armour every time he gets damaged.
- Tells Alphonse about his discovery, that the body they transmuted was not their mother, freeing Alphonse of the guilt he had over causing his mother to die the second time.

- Saves Winry's life by placing himself between her and Scar, which causes the Ishvalan to hesitate at his selflessness and begin to reconsider his path to vengeance.
- Convinces Winry to drop the gun, and reminds her that her hands - which delivered a baby in Rush Valley and gave him a new set of limbs - were not meant to take life but give it. He then holds her as she's overcome with grief and sadness.
- Makes a promise to Winry that the next time he makes her cry it will be of tears of joy.
- After seeing Lan Fan gravely maimed, he attempts to apologize to Ling.
- Asks Lan Fan if they can do anything for her, to which she replies that she would like an automail arm, which impressed him by her drive and promises her to introduce the Rockbells' to her.
- Helps Roy retreat into the car when Gluttony attempts to kill him.
- Attempts to save Ling from being devoured by Gluttony by diving forward to help his friend out of harm's way.
- Upon learning about Envy's role in the Ishvalan War, he becomes furious at Envy for all the atrocities they started, even mentioning how Scar was turned into a murderer because of Envy, showing that he actually sympathized with Scar in spite of him murdering both Winry's parents and Nina.
- Hesitates on striking Envy's true body as realizes the souls oozing from his body were once human.
- Is saddened for the Xerxesian souls being used, and thanks them for their sacrifice in allowing Ed to return to the real world.
- When Ling is about to turn into a Homunculus, he demands Envy to let them go by pointing a gun at him and when Envy plays dirty by forming sobbing Xerxesian faces, he is unable to shoot.
- Saves Kimblee's subordinate chimeras, Zampano and Jerso even though they attacked him previously so they can help him remove rod that's impaled through him and will heal his own wound with alchemy by cutting a short part of his life span.
- Though he is about to scold Winry for speaking highly of Kimblee in spite of his crimes, he stops himself and realizes he doesn't know enough about his past or how the Ishvalan War impacted him, becoming more considerate of others.
- When Winry declares her resolve of following through with her promise to only cry tears of joy, Ed holds her in an act of compassion.
- He is worried about Winry's safety and asks her to leave the country.
- Saves Heinkel before Pride can kill him.
- Recovers Alphonse's armored body from Pride.
- He's shocked and disgusted at Pride for eating his own ally, Gluttony.
- He along with Riza and Scar, stop Mustang from killing Envy and reminds him of his goal to lead the country which allows his temper to subside and helps him avoid walking down the path of vengeance.
- Feels sympathy towards Envy, explaining that though they are weak and sometimes fail, they will always have their friends to help them, something the Homunculi don't have. He then watches with a solemn expression as Envy cries and commits suicide.
- When Father comments on what the Elric brothers, Izumi and Mustang had lost as a testament to their sins and the undeniable truth, Edward refuses to buy into this since they forced Mustang to open The Gate against his will, which he finds unreasonable.
- When Pride restrains Ed as his own "container," Ed attempts to reason with him asking him why the Homunculi follow Father in the first place.
- Mercifully spares Pride by turning himself into a Philosopher's Stone, invading Pride and destroys his container. He then places Pride's true form on his folded coat. Later, he returns him to Mrs. Bradley to give him a second chance in life.
- Is concerned for Greed when Father attempts to take his Philosopher's Stone and is saddened by his sacrifice.
- After Greed used his ability to make Father's body brittle, he takes the chance and punches a hole through him, defeating him once and for all.
- When Ling offered the Philosopher's Stone in an attempt to bring back Alphonse, he refuses his offer, saying that he and his brother agreed on not use Human Lives to restore their bodies.
- When Hohenheim offers his last life to be used to bring back Alphonse, explaining that he is their father and that it is partly his fault for why the brothers attempted in Human Transmutation by leaving them, Ed is touched by this, shedding tears and berating Hohenheim for saying that, finally calling him 'father'.
- Sacrifices his Gate of Truth to bring Al's body back, saying that though the Gate is behind the alchemy, alchemy was the reason they were being manipulated. He says because they were shown things like the Truth, they believed anything and everything could be solved with alchemy. He then states this is wrong, saying it was nothing but pride.
- Upon being questioned whether he wishes to be 'degraded' to an ordinary person, Ed replies by saying he has always been an ordinary person, bringing up the example of his and his brother's failure of saving Nina.
- When Truth asks whether if he is alright with being 'degraded' into an ordinary person, he replies that even without Alchemy, he has his friends.
- He and Al successfully fulfill his promise to Winry to restore their bodies back to normal and is able to make her cry tears of joy upon witnessing this.
- Loses the majority of his corrupting qualities by the end of the series.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Resented Hohenheim for leaving him when he was little, and when he met his father again in a village, he immediately punched him in the face. Although that would be subverted later on, as he finally made his peace with him.
- Can have a few jerkish moments in the series, even for the smallest reasons.
- Easily loses his temper at times, such as when his short height is mentioned, even though he was able to get over with it by the end of the series.
