Dunban is one of the main playable characters in Xenoblade Chronicles. He is one of three heroes that defeated the Mechon army during the prologue in Sword Valley (along with Dickson and Mumkhar, both of whom would later reveal to be traitors). He was the original wielder of the Monado, an older brother of Fiora, and serves as a mentor to both Shulk and Reyn. Due to wielding the Monado for a long time, the toll ended up degrading his right arm, to the point that it is now almost completely paralysed. Despite this degradation, he is still able to efficiently wield a katana, albeit only with his left hand.
He is voiced by Ryō Horikawa in Japanese and Rufus Jones in English.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- A year prior to the main story, he, along with Dickson, repelled the invading Mechon forces at the battle of Sword Valley.
- Despite having his right arm almost fully paralyzed after using the Monado, he is still eager to protect his people in Colony 9.
- He tried their best in defending his home colony from the Mechon attack.
- He fought off Metal Face and his Mechon army along with Shulk, Reyn, Sharla, and Dickson just outside of Colony 6.
- He stops Shulk and Reyn from recklessly chasing after Metal Face, telling them to know their limits.
- He lets Shulk keep the Monado, saying that Shulk is far more capable in wielding it than he himself ever was.
- He found Melia unconscious and brought her to a safe place.
- He helped kill the Telethia that killed Melia’s guards in order to avenge them.
- He told Kalian, Melia’s older brother, that Homs do not affect High Entia’s traditions and he thinks they can enter the tome and save Melia from assassination without consequences.
- He saved Melia when the latter was about to be assassinated by Tyrea and her Telephia.
- He fought off Metal Face while trying to protect others in Prison Island, although he was unable to save Melia’s father.
- After finding out Fiora is still alive, while possessed by Meyneth, he goes after her and try to get her to snap out of it.
- He finally defeated Mumkhar/Metal Face in Sword Valley for good, after all the atrocities Mumkhar had done.
- Later he had a Heart-to-Heart moment with Melia (called ‘Eternal Scars’) where he wishes the late Mumkhar peace. This shows that he feels regret for Mumkhar’s demise.
- He helped Shulk in getting Fiora back to her senses.
- He accepted Miqol’s request in killing Egil, the leader of the Mechonis. Although, he was a bit reluctant at first.
- He helped Gadolt in breaking free of Egil’s control.
- He helped defeat Egil, preventing him from destroying the Bionis.
- After Zanza’s reawakening, he leads the party members in evacuating away the crumbling Mechonis.
- He helped defend Colony 6 from the attack of Telethia’s.
- Before entering the final battle with Dickson and Zanza, he warns other party members that they will be unable to return and suggests that they need to be properly prepared.
- He helped defeat Zanza and his two disciples, Dickson and Lorithia, for good, preventing them from resetting the world.
- Following Zanza’s death we see him working alongside Otharon and Vanea in building the new world.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He is very vengeful to those who betrayed him, especially Dickson and Mumkhar. He was even willing to kill another Homs if it was necessary, such as Gadolt/Jade Face, until Reyn gestured him to stop. While he did mellow down a bit, thanks to Shulk, even wishing Mumkhar peace, there were still a few moments where he is urged to kill.
- He has slightly jerky qualities given some of his battle dialogue mainly with Reyn, however this is a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- He has a small dose of arrogance whenever he fights a much weaker enemy as he stated "I don't have time for small fries!" However, this only occurs during gameplay and it is completely optional to fight weaker enemies as Dunban does not show to have arrogance in-story. Even if he does, this would not likely affect his NPG status.
