Donkey Kong is a major character in Illumination's 13th full-length animated feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

He is an anthropomorphic gorilla who is the son of Cranky Kong, the king of the Jungle Kingdom, and the friendly rival of Mario.

He was voiced by Seth Rogen, who also voices Mantis in the Kung Fu Panda franchise.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • Unlike his video game counterpart, he is not anti-heroic as while he did start out as one, he sheds it and has far much less corruptions, such as not getting aggressive when his bananas are stolen for example, thus making him the unlikely mean hero.
  • Since Pauline doesn't have a role other than a cameo to be Donkey Kong's crush, the running gag of him capturing her doesn't happen in the film.

Movie[]

  • While he initially brutally beats up Mario during their duel (even voicing his intent to kill him) and shows his hatred of him after Mario wins, he eventually warms up to him after they find the rocket barrel in the eels mouth, and teases him in a somewhat bury the hatchet manner and become friendly rivals.
  • He and the other Kongs help Princess Peach fight against Bowser's Koopa army on the Rainbow Road.
  • After being saved by Mario from drowning, he expressed gratefulness.
  • He helps Mario escape the eel's mouth and fight through Bowser's army so they can stop Bowser from marrying Peach and save the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • He stops Bowser's crank from dropping all his prisoners, namely Luigi, Lumalee, the Penguin King and his subjects, the Kongs and his father into a pool of lava, saving their lives.
    • He also decided to go see if Mario and the others were okay instead of bragging about his accomplishment, proving that he now cared more about his others' safety than bragging.
  • When everyone is transported to Brooklyn, he protects Peach and Toad from the falling rubble before helping fight Bowser when he is about to kill a beaten and cornered Mario, nearly getting killed before Mario regains his courage and steps in.
  • Having been praised by his own father, he is also happy when Mario is praised by his father for defeating Bowser (previously acting spiteful to Mario's issues), gathering everyone into a group hug.
  • While he used to be egotistical, petty and a sore loser as well, this was because he wanted to gain his father's approval by any means necessary. However, this wasn't brought up again later by the end of the movie.
  • Overall, he subverted most of his jerkish behavior, and is not nearly as jerkish, selfish, or anti heroic as his game counterpart.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He is very arrogant and self-centered, frequently displaying his love of showboating to his audience of fans (much to his father's embarrassment).
  • He has many jerkish moments throughout the film, such as mocking Mario for his crush on Peach, calling Mario a loser after the latter loses his fire power and when the latter levels with him on how his father also sees him as a disappointment, he masks his empathy for him by spitefully saying his father is right to think of him that way, and even though they were subverted, they were still far too frequent to not be mentioned. However, it's in a more playful manner after they bury the hatchet and become friends.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only version of Donkey Kong to be Near Pure Good, as his mainstream counterpart, while friendlier and having done more admirable acts, is Inconsistently Admirable due to being lethal and arguably having some anti-heroic qualities.
    • Since a sequel is confirmed, his NPG status could be challenged, if he shows more of his usual corruptions, or not.
  • Donkey Kong and Knuckles have opposite statuses to their mainstream counterparts. Donkey Kong is Inconsistently Admirable in the games due to being an Anti-Hero, and Knuckles is normally Near Pure Good in the games/IDW canon, as well as the Archie comics, but it is reversed in their movie versions.
