Donkey is the deuteragonist of the Shrek franchise.
He is an anthropomorphic donkey who talks a lot but makes up for it with his fierce loyalty to those he cares about and willingness to forgive others even if they do not deserve it.
He was voiced by Eddie Murphy.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
Shrek[]
- Upon seeing Shrek the first time, Donkey looks past who he is on the outside and realizes that Shrek can be a noble person rather than just a violent ogre.
- Despite Shrek constantly being rude to him, Donkey never lets that stop him from wanting to be his friend, and despite being incompetent at first, always tries his hardest to assist Shrek in his goals and becomes more competent as the film and the series goes on.
- He helps Shrek when he is forced into a fight against Farquaad's guards by running them over with a barrel and beating two of the guards up for Shrek.
- He goes with Shrek to rescue Princess Fiona, distracting Dragon while Shrek went to find Fiona.
- He attempts to get Shrek to open up about his reasons for wanting to block everyone off. When Shrek states that everyone judged him before they got to know him, Donkey comforts him by reminding him that he didn't view him as just an ugly ogre when they met.
- When he saw that Shrek had been injured, he attempts to find the right flowers to heal him with not knowing Fiona just wanted him away so she could pull the arrow out and when he heard that Shrek was in pain he grabbed any flowers he could find, rushing back to Shrek as fast as he could due to feeling concerned about him.
- After learning Fiona's secret, he comforts her, telling her that Shrek was someone who cared about her and encourages her to tell Shrek the truth.
- Tries to stop Shrek from leaving when Lord Farquaad arrives and takes Fiona with him.
- After realizing that Shrek and Fiona belong together, Donkey returns to Shrek's swamp and tells Shrek that Fiona wasn't talking about him, and despite being rude to him earlier, Shrek forgives him and apologizes for disowning him. Donkey gives Shrek the transport he needs to make it to Fiona's wedding in time via riding on Dragon's back and flying to Duloc.
- When Shrek whistles for assistance, Donkey and Dragon come to the rescue by eating Farquaad after he threatened to banish Fiona for her entire life and have Shrek drawn and quartered. Donkey threatens the other guards into leaving the two alone so that Shrek and Fiona can start their relationship.
- As a result of Donkey's influence and support, Shrek ultimately ends up becoming a friendlier, more social person. As a result, it can be said that Donkey helped redeem Shrek by showing him that he could be more than a terrifying ogre.
Shrek 2[]
- In Far Far Away, Donkey chastises Shrek for how rudely he spoke to Fiona.
- Donkey goes with Shrek to the woods for the hunting excursion with King Harold to help him make things right with the latter.
- When Shrek is attacked by Puss In Boots, Donkey attempts to stop Puss despite accidentally injuring Shrek in the process.
- When Shrek requires a potion so that he can turn into a human so that others can accept him, Donkey assists him with this and catches the potion when it falls out of the cupboard before it smashed to the floor.
- He later drinks the potion first to taste test it and make sure there isn't anything wrong with it.
- Donkey tries to convince Shrek not to let Fiona go after Shrek is convinced that Fiona would be better off with Prince Charming. Then, after being imprisoned for overhearing Fairy Godmother's plan to force Fiona to fall in love with her, Donkey is pleased to see that Shrek had abandoned his previous desire to let go of Fiona.
- He assists Shrek greatly in making it to Fiona before she is in love with Prince Charming forever due to the love spell by acting as transport for him and the others to make it there fast enough.
- Donkey rightfully scolds King Harold for hypocritically judging Shrek when it's revealed that he was actually a frog, something which King Harold agrees with.
Shrek the Third[]
- Donkey goes with Shrek to help find the next heir to the kingdom of Far Far Away after Harold's death.
- When two people at the medieval high school bully Arthur, Donkey says that they should be ashamed of themselves.
- He saves his children from imprisonment along with Puss.
- When Arthur attempts to leave after Shrek mocks him, both Donkey and Puss tell Arthur that Shrek only said those horrible things to save Arthur from being killed by Prince Charming.
- He and Puss play a big role in helping Fiona and the other princesses in liberating Far Far Away from Prince Charming by saving Gingy and Pinocchio, along with convincing Arthur to not give up on being king due to the fact that Shrek saved him as Charming planned to kill Arthur, which saved the entire kingdom in the process due to Arthur resolving the conflict using diplomacy rather then violence which would end with him becoming the king of Far Far Away.
Shrek Forever After[]
- In the alternate timeline, Donkey is hostile towards Shrek at first, but after seeing Shrek cry, he realizes that Shrek is a good person at heart and decides to help him.
- He helps Shrek find the exit clause in Rumpelstiltskin's contract, which would give Shrek the information on how to get his life back and restore the timeline to how it was.
- Donkey and Puss help Shrek and Fiona escape the Pied Piper's music and free themselves from his control.
- After realizing that Shrek sacrificed himself to save the rest of the ogres, Donkey comes up with a clever plan that allowed the ogres to infiltrate Rumpelstiltskin's palace and save Shrek and Fiona, and it also allows Shrek to get back to his original timeline before he is killed.
- Donkey attempts to woo Dragon to save Shrek and Fiona's lives, and despite being scared to do it, he still did it anyway.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite being affable towards his friends and his own family most of the time, Donkey has a few jerkish moments that he doesn't subvert by the latest entry in the series, such as when he helps Shrek and Puss rob two people of their clothes, when he makes a deal with Pinocchio to cheat in the scary story contest during Scared Shrekless, and when, while travelling with Shrek and Fiona to Far Far Away, he repeatedly makes a popping noise with his mouth that Shrek finds extremely annoying, which he does again on purpose even after Shrek asks him to stop and it was evident he was only making the stress he was already feeling about going there worse.
