Logic! Why don't they teach logic at these schools?
~ Professor Kirke's most famous quote.

Digory Kirke, also known as Professor Kirke, is a major character in The Chronicles of Narnia book series, being the titular main protagonist of The Magician's Nephew, a minor yet pivotal character in The Lion, the Witch and the Wadrobe and a supporting protagonist in The Last Battle. He is one of the Seven Friends of Narnia, and the only one of them (and one of the only characters in general) to have witnessed both Narnia's creation, and destruction. In the movies, he was portrayed by Jim Broadbent.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • He touched one of his uncle's rings to save his friend Polly, despite being afraid, as the ring would send him to an unknown land.
  • Helped Polly and himself recover their memories and snap out of the Wood Between Worlds's drowsiness.
  • Felt remorse over hurting Polly and waking up Jadis.
  • Banished Jadis from Earth using the rings, despite accidentally taking Uncle Andrew, Polly, a horse and his horseman with him.
  • Went to a palace recover an Apple of Eternal Youth to Aslan, as it'd help protect Narnia form Jadis, an evil Digory himself brought there.
  • Refused Jadis's offer of corruption, despite she successfully convincing him Aslan wouldn't let him use the apple to cure his mother, staying loyal to Aslan 'till the end.
  • Used the apple to cure his mother once Aslan gave it to him, as a reward for being honorable.
  • Built and wardrobe with the wood from the tree from the apple Aslan gave him, the wardrobe that would later bring the Pevensies to Narnia, meaning he was indirectly responsible for them going to Narnia and ending Jadis's tyranny.
  • Subverted all of his corrupting factors as he grew up into the Professor.
  • Accepted the Pevensie siblings in his house.
  • Convinced Susan and Peter to believe in Lucy.
  • Is a part of the group known as Seven Friends of Narnia, along with other humans who visited Narnia, such as the Pevensies (minus Susan), Eustace, Jill and his friend, Polly, where they debate and give advice to Jill and Eustace, the ones that currently are able to get into Narnia sometimes.
  • Unburied the rings of his uncle to help Eustace and Jill get back to Narnia, despite them proving useless, as they got there by other means.
  • After he and the Friends died in a terrible train accident, they were all to Aslan's country, as they helped Narnia and were good people.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Fails the admirable standard to the Pevensie siblings, who saved Narnia three times (two, in Peter and Susan's case) and ruled it as good Kings and Queens for many years, and to Aslan, despite his infinitely higher resources make it unfair comparing Digory with him.
  • Despite his remorse, waking up Jadis out of pure ill-temper is what brought the primordial evil to Narnia and caused all of the years of suffering due to Jadis's tyranny.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only The Chronicles of Narnia character to be Near Pure Good.
