Diego is the tritagonist of Blue Sky Studios' Ice Age franchise.
He is a Smilodon who initially has the task, given by his pack, to track down and kill a baby human, with the only things getting in his way being grumpy woolly mammoth Manfred and clumsy ground sloth Sid. While initially wanting to kill them, he actually grows to become their friend and accompany them throughout many adventures, the first being retrieving the baby he was originally intended to kill.
He was voiced by Denis Leary, who also played Captain George Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Though he does hunt other animals on occasion, he is a predator who needs to eat meat to survive, so therefore it is not a corrupting factor.
Ice Age[]
- Despite starting as a villain, intended to kill Roshan, Sid and Manny, he develops a friendship and fondness with them as they travel together.
- He fought the leader of his pack, Soto, to protect his new friends, nearly dying in the process.
Ice Age: The Meltdown[]
- He saved Ellie and Manny from drowning and helped the others stop the Meltdown.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs[]
- Despite wanting to find his own place and leave his friends, he tags along to the Lost World when Sid is taken by Momma Dino.
- He helps the group get through things such as deadly laughing gas and dangerous plants and animals across the dinosaur world.
- He protected Ellie from the velociraptors while she was giving birth to Peaches.
- He helped take on Rudy by tying him up along with the others.
Ice Age: Continental Drift[]
- He prevented Manny from going over the ice when the continental drift occurred knowing he wouldn’t make the jump over it.
- He states to Shira that he doesn't fight girls, suggesting that he doesn't pick up fights with those he knows or assumes are not as strong as him.
- He saved Shira from drowning.
- He, Manny and Sid free the hyraxes from slavery by pirates.
- He eventually redeemed Shira after falling in love with her, thus playing a considerable role in Captain Gutt's defeat by that.
- He helped stop Gutt's pirate crew from hurting his friends.
Ice Age: Collison Course[]
- Like Ellie, he doesn't approve Manny's behaviour against Julian.
- He helped the group save the whole world by catapulting a crystal to attract the asteroid away.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite his redemption in the original film, he can still somewhat be lethal in a few occasions, as he choked Sid for making fun of his aquaphobia, and he threatened to kill Uncle Fungus and Sid's family members for causing mischief upon him.
- He can be mischievous and jerkish as he sometimes laughs at his friends' misfortunes and can be downright mean to them, mostly towards Sid.
- Amongst his most infamous jerkish moments were in the second film when he alongside the rest of the animals told Sid to jump from the Eviscerator (which was very mean-spirited of his part since this was basically a suicide-dare) and in the fourth film when he lied to Sid that his family was wiped out by an asteroid which got him scared, in both occasions even Manny (who is arguably even much more jerkish) ended up glaring and calling him out for.
Trivia[]
- Because another Ice Age film has been confirmed (Ice Age: Boiling Point), there's a chance Diego's Near Pure Good status could change.
