Oh, Cruddlesticks
~ David's catchphrase

David is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Frida and Alfur Aldric) in Netflix's animated series, Hilda, based on the graphic novels of same name by Luke Pearson.

He is a boy who is friends with Hilda and Frida, living in Trollberg. Despite being scared of mostly everything, David usually tags along for Hilda's crazy adventures around the city, or out of it. He is always ready to help Frida and Hilda despite his fears, something that shows especially during Hilda's time as a troll, and in the adventure involving them going to the Fairy Mound.

He was voiced by Oliver Nelson.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • He helped save the life of multiple Vittra that he, Frida and Hilda accidentally sent to their deaths, mistaking them for normal plants.
  • When Hilda was screaming and twitching in her Marra-induced nightmare, he woke her up, knowing that doing this would cause the Marra to come back to target him instead, but acknowledging he couldn't let Hilda take that toll for him.
  • Forgave Hilda very quickly for her accident with the Tide Mice, even if it almost cost him his soul.
  • Wrestled a ghost in a graveyard to try and get Frida's book back. He also, even if doing so in a jerkish way, raises points on how Frida could clean her own room and not depend on others.
  • Defended Hilda when she and Frida were arguing, showing loyalty to Hilda even if Frida knew him longer than Hilda, and as Hilda pointed out, he was justified in calling Frida out.
  • Went to Trolberg's meteorological centre with Hilda in order to check and see if Victoria Van Gale was alright; then, he sensed something suspicious and kept trying to investigate her private room multiple times, and he turned out to be right, as Hilda would find out, as Victoria had a infant cloud spirit trapped in there.
  • He stood up to all the Marra and for Frida, which eventually makes Frida stop hanging out with them.
  • Saved Frida from the Black Hound when he tried to swallow her up.
  • Although he became a huge jerk in "The Eternal Warriors", it was only because he was stripped away form all his fear, and by the end of the episode, he got to his older, nicer self, after the effect was removed.
  • He didn't trust Victoria Van Gale, and kept investigating her and her fake Nisse, until he found out she used black magic to bring it to life, and she planned to open up the Nowhere Space. Once aware of this, he got Hilda and Tontu to go back to the Windmill, save Frida and stop Victoria, as her machine would put the entirety of Trolberg at risk.
  • He tried to free Frida from her straps and fought the Fake Nisse that was trying to stop him from interfering with Victoria's purposes.
  • By serving as the team's watch out, he played a significant role in coordinating everyone in the Operation Deerfox Thunder Team, that destroyed all Mechanic Bellkeepers in Trolberg, that were causing a lot of problems around town.
  • He tried to get the Lindworm and the Lost Clan to stop fighting, and although he failed to get them to help save the sailors (they got okay though) managed to keep them from further harming each other, and the Lindorm would've easily killed many Lost Clan Elves.
  • Helped in the plan to prevent Grylla from eating "naughty" children (and adults) and forgave the Yule Lads.
  • Used the very money he was saving up in order to buy a present Hilda wanted to give her mother, while playfully saying she owed him lots of candy.
  • Helped save a whole lot of people in the Jorts enterprises from going through a fate worse than death by taking the tide mice off of them, and helping Kaisa, the whitch, do the same.
  • He and Frida try to find Hilda and Johanna when they go missing. After Frida hurts her ankle, he helps her throughout the rest of the journey. He also team up with Erik and Gerda, who they help go back to the city safely.
  • He helped protest against the security patrol's scandalous video that demonized trolls, though he had not enough courage to do it in front of his mother, a bellringer herself.
  • He tries, with Frida, to go with Johanna help save Hilda. When they're declined, he helps Frida in a spell attempt to bring Hilda back.
  • He saves Frida by playing the bell in order to stun the troll attacking her and allowing her to leave.
  • He tricked Eugene into allowing he, Frida, Hilda and Louise to play a game and have a chance at saving their freedom from him, which is the only thing that allows them to go back.
  • He helped the others get out of Eugene's cave while Louise kept making sure they were going down the right path.
  • He warns Johanna about Hilda and her father's whereabouts, allowing her to go there and save them.
  • He helped Frida with her ambitions of solving Nisse relations, allowing them to stop stealing form each other constantly and without reason.
  • He decided to go with Frida and Hilda save Anders from the Fairy Mound.
  • Though clearly hesitant, he and Frida stop Johanna from getting Hilda out of the Fairy Mound too soon, before she can get her father out as well. They fail to prevent her from entering it herself though.
  • He bravely gets in the Fairy Mound portal and saves both Hilda and Anders, and Twig from it.
  • Takes care of Frida after she gets very ill due to misusing a spell, and although he shoos Twig, who is only trying to help by summoning his herd, out, is because his howling was not doing good to Frida, and he didn't know what he was trying to do anyway.
  • Helps look for Twig, now that he knows he is possibly the only way to save Hilda.
  • He hugs Frida in confort, while being broken himself, when they think Johanna is dead.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He has notable jerkish moments, notably constantly mocking Frida over not tidying her own room during the ghost incident, which led to actual physical fights betweem the two for some moments.
  • His most admirable action of uncovering and attempting to prevent Van Gale's plans in "The Windmill", that threatened the whole city, is a little bit relying of Fridge Brillance since the machine ended up failing and collapsing on itself without harming Trollberg, though his intentions were still very admirable. This makes him fail the standard to Frida and Hilda, who saved Trollberg from Trundle. Even then, he has slightly less resources than Frida and Hilda; the former being a magical witch and the latter being much more athletic and more versed in adventure ever since she was a toddler, compared to him.

Trivia[]

  • He and Johanna are the only Hilda characters to qualify for Near Pure Good.
