Coran is one of the main characters of Voltron: Legendary Defender. He was the advisor of King Alfor of Altea and the guardian of Alfor’s daughter Princess Allura who was locked in 10,000 years of stasis following the destruction of Altea by Emperor Zarkon. Upon being reawoken by five human explorers, he helps Allura make them become paladins of Voltron so together they could defeat Zarkon and liberate the universe. With Princess Allura’s sacrifice in the finale, he is the last ancient Altean alive.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- He didn’t want to leave King Alfor’s side when the end was near and only did so on King Alfor’s insistence to watch over his stasis-locked daughter, storing King Alfor’s memories in the Castle of Lions and setting coordinates to get as far away from Zarkon as possible and placing himself in stasis for the fateful day new paladins would arise.
- After being reawoken and discovering the destruction of Altea and the death of King Alfor, he comforted Allura and showed her the A.I program of King Alfor’s memories he installed on King Alfor’s request to advise her.
- Although he initially called Pidge “number five” as a condescending way to describe her based on height, he grew to respect her intelligence and the nickname became an affectionate one.
- He went to get the battleship-class crystal from the Balmera and had Hunk accompany him, escaping from the Galra occupied Balmera with the crystal in order to use it to power the Castle of Lions after the previous crystal had been destroyed and heal Lance in a cryo-pod.
- He extracted an imprisoned Sendak’s memories in a painless process via an Altean program to gain valuable intelligence on the Galra.
- He saved Lance from being frozen and killed by a corrupted cyro-pod and broke Allura free of the trance King Alfor’s corrupted A.I put her under.
- He formed a plan to have the Castle of Lions hide in one of the dense gas planets in Zarkon’s command system while Team Voltron went to go rescue Allura with Allura’s coordinates which he located. However, he blew his cover to save Team Voltron when Zarkon set up a trap to get them to come and provided cover against the whole fleet while Team Voltron rescued Allura and they could escape. He also repeatedly warned Keith not to engage Zarkon even in his Voltron Lion as Zarkon was too powerful.
- He improvised a way to activate the teludav so the team could escape from Zarkon’s repeated attempts to hunt them down.
- He got new scaultrite lens to fix and power the teludav so the Castle of Lions could make wormhole jumps again.
- He constructed a massive teludav as part of the heroes plan to wormhole Zarkon’s ship out light years away after uploading a virus to take down their systems and then defeated Zarkon once and for all.
- He cared for Allura after she fell unconscious due to exerting an incredible amount of power to power the giant teludav and got the Castle of Lions back online after it was shut down by Zarkon.
- He narrated the backstory of King Alfor and Emperor Zarkon to the paladins in order to figure out that Lotor’s plan was to cross into the rift between realities to harvest the purest quintessence possible.
- He rallied worlds to join the Voltron Coalition through a parade with the Voltron Lions.
- He escorted hundreds of refugees to Olkarion to get a new home and join the rebellion.
- Although he took a conscious mind-enhancer to think of new ideas for the Voltron show, he didn’t realize it was a parasite which took over his mind and after endangering the intergalactic broadcast show with an alien beast, he was able to briefly break free of its control and tell Bi-Boh-Bi to remove the parasite from him. He warned Team Voltron that the beast was real and not part of the show so they could defeat it and apologized profusely for what had happened.
- He jumpstarted the Castle of Lions after Haggar’s clone of Shiro shut it down and nearly destroyed it.
- He informed Team Voltron after they defeated Lotor and returned from the quintessence field that all of Lotor’s jumps in and out of the quintessence field had created multiple tears in spacetime that would destroy the entire multiverse. He figured out a way to seal the rift by overloading the teludav which would create a flash of infinite mass strong enough to seal the tears, sacrificing the Castle of Lions, the only memory of his family and Altea, to save the entire multiverse.
- He led a successful mission to get the fuel additive faunotonium to recharge the Voltron Lions so they could go to Earth.
- He upgraded the Galaxy Garrison’s MFE fighters with faunotonium to give them enough power to go long-range distances and attack one of Sendak’s six bases that were launching Zaiforge cannons to stop them from launching.
- He powered the Atlas by using the pressurized diamond created when the Castle of Lions collapsed from the pressured of the quintessence rifts and infinite mass, allowing the Atlas to launch and for the Galaxy Garrison to launch a full-scale attack on Sendak’s forces to rescue the paladins and save Earth from being destroyed.
- He took control of the Atlas after Shiro went to infiltrate Sendak’s ship and after the Voltron paladins failed to stop Sendak from firing the Zaiforge cannons towards Earth, he maneuvered the Atlas to intercept the blast, saving Earth and buying enough time for the paladins to destroy the Zaiforge cannons and defeat Sendak once and for all.
- He formed a plan and led Sam, Slav, the Alteans, Balmerans, and Galra in exerting all their energy into the Altean superstructure to contain the rift Honerva made when she pierced through realities to prevent the collapse of the universe and buy time for the paladins to defeat Honerva.
- Following one year after Princess Allura’s sacrifice to restore the multiverse along with Altea and Daibazaal, he had become the leader of Altea, resettling it with the Altean colonists, erecting statues of Allura, and ordering construction of a new Castle of Lions. He ordered a giant celebration of Allura which he promised would be the first of many to come and invited the paladins to have a feast. After the team gave updates of what they have been doing now that they were no longer paladins, Coran stated how proud he was and Allura would be of them, reminded them of Allura’s actions and led a toast in Allura’s honor.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He has moments of being a jerk including teasing Lance by making him kiss a mouse when Lance asked Allura for a good-luck kiss and closed his eyes, lashing out at Bi-Boh-Be for accidentally interrupting him, or messing with Lance when he asked him for help on dating Allura.
- He has some arrogance and overconfidence in his abilities particularly his fighting abilities.
