These are Near Pure Goods who developed a good level of empathy for other characters, including those who are villains and/or oppose them. Usually, this is because they relate to an experience they've had that made them the way that they are, or because they acknowledge that the way they turned out wasn't completely their fault or within their control. Therefore, they often show them sympathy and/or try to emotionally reach out to them, or at the very least, try to encourage others to understand their point of view and not just see them as an enemy to be defeated. Their evil counterparts are Sympathetic Near Pure Evils and their opposites are psychopaths.
