NOTE: This page is only about the version of Buzz shown in the 2021 movie, Lightyear, as his other incarnations weren't voted Near Pure Good, and thus, only information about that version of Buzz should be included here.

To infinity and beyond!
~ Buzz quoting his toy counterpart with either Alisha or Izzy, his most famous quote

Buzz Lightyear is the titular main protagonist of Pixar's 26th full-length animated feature film, Lightyear, based on the character of the same name from the Toy Story franchise.

He is a famous Space Ranger who completed countless missions alongside his best friend, Alisha Hawthorne. However, in one of those, a mistake of his ends up causing all the space rangers that were inside the ginormous ship they were using to travel to get stuck in the wild planet they were exploring. This hits very hard on Buzz, so he gets obsessed with finding a way to create a hyperspace fuel and get everybody out of the planet to correct his mistake. While he did succeed, with the help of a robot Alisha created to help him, Sox, he ended up going 22 years in the future and having to deal with an intergalactic warlord, Zurg, along with Alisha's granddaughter, Izzy Hawthorne, and her gang of recruits.

He was voiced by Chris Evans.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • He completed many missions in the past with Alisha.
  • He was a very good friend to Alisha.
  • He never gave up on becoming an actual space ranger.
  • He saved the life of the recruit Alisha got him to train.
  • Tried to save everybody on the ship from being attacked by the hostile lifeforms of T'Kani Prime.
  • Despite the fact he was responsible for marooning Star Command, he had to find a way to fix his incompetent moment and find a way to find a way to fix the spaceship he didn't pilot correctly.
  • He became so focused on trying to fix his mistake and bring everybody home, he completed a number of space travels that, due to time dilation, got him four years in the future each time.
  • Though he didn't want his support, he does cared for Sox.
  • He tried to use Sox's newly created hyperspace fuel to fix his mistake.
  • Helped Izzy's rebellion fight back at the Zyclops, attacking T'Kani Prime.
  • He gave Izzy and the others some advice and started allowing himself to be helped.
  • While initially amazed at the idea, he rejected Zurg's offer of erasing the already-existing timeline to fix his mistake and be able to bring Alisha and the others back home, as Izzy taught him to let go of things, and he saw that it would erase the generations that were born in that in-between time.
  • He fought Zurg and stopped him from altering the timeline.
  • While the existence of Zurg proved that he wasn't incorruptible, he ultimately learned to let go of things as Izzy convinced him to stay within the colony, and outright refused to collaborate with Zurg's plans after finding out that he was attacking the colony at T'Kani Prime, indirectly preventing his existence again.
  • Allowed himself to get punished for his wrongings by Burnside, despite Burnside congratulating him.
  • Chose Izzy, Mo, Darby, and Sox as his partner Space Rangers, despite their being inexperienced, as they were his friends.
  • Overall, he subverted most of his arrogance and jerkiness throughout the movie.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • There really isn't enough screentime after him reforming to show that he is really beyond all of his very corrupting qualities, as they were indeed quite a few, and nothing implies that, even if less, several jerk moments can't happen from time to time. He was also really arrogant in regard to the rookies, often acting like he's superior to them.
  • He started off as pretty incompetent in the beginning of the film (ex. marooning Star Command itself because of his arrogance and poor decision making that got him to steer the spaceship incorrectly and crashing the ship, and got completely remorseful in this blunder he made to the point of almost giving up his job as a Space Ranger), but does his best to fix his mistakes throughout the film and becomes somewhat more competent later in the film, thus making this a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • He and Sox are the only Lightyear Near Pure Goods.
  • Since he is Near Pure Good, he serves as a foil to Zurg, who is Near Pure Evil.
  • Interestingly, his toy counterpart he's based on is Pure Good.
  • Angus McLane expressed his interest in making a sequel to Lightyear despite its financial underperformance. If this were to happen, it is unknown how much it will affect Buzz's NPG status.
