You are different from the others. You can see from both sides. You tell that the demons avoided the land for many years after your ancestors retaliated. What if you're now their demon? And what if, as you told me before, no-one had to be enemies?
~ Brighteye to Blaze about making peace with the gravediggers.

Brighteye is a major protagonist of the Late Ocean Age in Serina: A Natural History of the World of Birds.

He is a bluetailed chatteraven and the only sapient member of his species. Treated as a pariah by his clan due to his high intelligence and compassion, Brighteye eventually left the clan alongside his brother Whitecrown, finding kinship with a woolly wumpo named Blaze and her herd.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Despite being an animal, he has a clear moral agency and personality, as he is sapient and actively defies the ways of other bluetails to help those he cares about.
  • He cared for and protected his brother Whitecrown for most of his life.
  • While he killed Tyr-reet, it was necessary to protect his brother.
  • He displayed empathy towards other species beyond his clan.
  • He felt a kinship with Blaze upon meeting her due to her heterochromia marking her as unique in the same way his intelligence and Whitecrown's albinism made them unique.
  • He saved Blaze from a dire bumblebear by imitating the cries of its cub to drive it away, then risking his life to fight off a horde of razorback thorngrazers to defend her.
  • He befriended Blaze and her herd even after their past experiences with bluetails hunting them.
  • He came to understand the gravediggers as a family much like Blaze's herd.
  • He proposed making peace with the gravediggers and ending their cold war with the woolly wumpos.
  • He didn't grow arrogant when the sea stewards regarded him as a prophet, and only became pressured in the role.
  • While he defeated Whitecrown in combat, he only fought back when he had no choice but to defend himself while his brother's instincts took over.
  • He was horrified when Whitecrown and his clan were killed in an explosion, even after his brother turned on him.
  • He went back to try to warn the wumpos and the sea stewards of the coal-induced wildfire.
  • He blamed himself for the catastrophe and felt remorse over it.
  • Even though he cursed the Observer before his death, his anger was justified because their manipulations were responsible for the catastrophe and the deaths of everyone he loved.
  • He meets the Admirable Standard of the series due to his acts of helping and protecting other sophonts in spite of his low resources compared to the sea stewards.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He wanted to learn to create fire from the gravediggers even after hearing about Retally's folly, making him somewhat power-hungry. However, given that he wanted to use it to protect Blaze's herd from the invasive razorbacks, this is only a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Near Pure Good to come from a work of speculative evolution, as well as the only Serina hero to be Near Pure Good.
