We’re a match made in Heaven!
~ Breel’s message on his Valentine’s day card
I’m not a ghost! A Ghost is an echo or a memory that’s still bound to Earth. This form is more akin to an… Angel? No, that word’s overused… Muse, maybe? Anyway, difference is I got this cool halo.
~ Breel explains his nature when visiting Keene in the land of the living.
Keene: Breel, you didn’t have to do this for me…
Breel: Aww, but if you’ll have me, why not?
~ Breel chooses to reincarnate to stay with his boyfriend, Keene on Earth.

Breel is a supporting character in Rick Griffin's webcomic Housepets!.

He is a kind-hearted pine marten who, after dying in the 1860s, became a Denizen of Heaven where, centuries later, he would meet his future boyfriend, the ferret multi-billionaire Keene Milton whom Breel would help in abandoning his misguided ways.

He first appeared in the strip "The First".

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Although he's implied to have been a criminal when alive, he was also very poor at the time and it's likely he only tried to make ends meet. Regardless, it doesn't come close to invalidating his good actions in the comic.
  • When he died, he went to Heaven where he started working at a massage parlor for mustelids so as to make afterlife in Heaven even more comfortable for its denizens.
  • He's always kind, polite and eager to help others.
  • Unlike many other characters in the comic, he rarely ever acts sardonically or snarky, only occasionally teasing Keene playfully.
  • When, after an assassination attempt from PETA, Keene Milton briefly stayed in Heaven, Breel made his stay as pleasant as possible by massaging him, taking him out for lunch and making him have all sorts of fun.
  • When he realized Keene didn't know he was in Heaven, Breel took him to Heaven's orientation center to tactfully break the news to him.
  • Along with Cerberus and Keene's mother, he accompanied Keene on his journey to understand his purpose in life.
  • Bid Keene a warm goodbye when it was found out PETA hadn't succeeded in killing him and he could go back to Earth.
  • Breel, alongside Rufus and the angels Summer and Spring, was sent on Earth to stop Keene when he tried using the Mana inside Pete's Temple to magic(k)ally impose Animal-Human equality on Earth, as it could've had disastrous consequences. In Breel's case, he repeatedly tried talking Keene out of his plan, as he saw him as misguided rather than evil.
  • He worried for the animals Keene had sent to find the Mana for him, asking Keene if he had at least given them food.
  • When Keene reached the core of the Temple where the Mana was, Breel blocked him off from using it and tried for the last time to convince Keene to give up his delusional plan.
  • He briefly tried to hold the Forgotten back.
  • When Keene arrived to free Breel from Pandemonium, the latter forgave him for everything (including when Keene angrily yelled at him) and kissed Keene, the power of love destroying both of their demonic chains.
  • When the Mana was finally drained, the Forgotten finally defeated and it was time for Breel to return to Heaven, he asked Cerberus to be reincarnated back to life so he'd stay with his boyfriend, Keene on Earth for another 40-50 years, as he loved Keene and knew the ferret needed him.
  • As Keene's boyfriend, he's always loving and supportive, even when his fiance's more eccentric quirks resurface.
  • When the transformed humans, Marion and Lois, attacked Keene thinking their transformations were his doing, Breel calmed the two down with cookies he had baked and saved Keene.
  • He defended Keene when Marion lashed out at him for being an indirect cause of his condition.
  • Was so happy to have been reunited with Keene after there had been a mishap in Heaven that he was unable to be afraid of NegaBreel, who was trying to kill him, and even offered the demon some muffins.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • When he died, his soul was split in half, with his good side going to Heaven and his evil side, NegaBreel, going to Pandemonium. Since, in the comic, he is the pure good half of the original Breel with all of his evil stripped away, he is pretty much Made of Good and suffers from Moral Agency issues. Since he does have a personality and has been able of snarkiness at times, this is a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • He's, so far, the only hero in Housepets! to be Near Pure Good.
  • As the webcomic is on-going, it's possible Breel may overcome his moral agency issues in the future and maybe become Pure Good.
