Basil of Baker Street (simply better known as Basil) is the titular main protagonist of Disney's 26th full-length animated feature film from 1986, The Great Mouse Detective, which was based on the Basil of Baker Street book series by Eve Titus.
He is a mouse who lives in Baker Street, under the house of London's famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and is arguably the best mouse detective of the U.K. In the movie, he has to find the missing father of Olivia Flaversham, Hiram, which would let to a conflict between him and his arch-nemesis, Professor Ratigan.
In the original film, he was voiced by the late Barrie Ingham.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- While he only wanted to start looking for Mr. Flaversham when he discovered Ratigan was involved, arguably making him a hero by proxy, he stops being so cold and pragmatic as the movie goes by. Not to mention the fact that he genuinely wanted to stop Ratigan.
- As he is a detective, he likely solved many crimes in the past, as he goes by "The Great Mouse Detective".
- He mentions to Dawson and Olivia that he attempted to stop Ratigan and his plans multiple times in the past.
- He helped Doctor Dawson look for Olivia's Flaversham's missing father, Hiram, who got abducted by Ratgan's bat conspirator, Fdget.
- He tried to stop Fidget from kidnapping Olivia, but even when he failed, he assured Dawson that they'll save her and her father.
- He saved himself and Dawson from Ratigan's trap.
- He foiled Ratigan's plan of taking over Great Britain by exchanging its queen with Flaversham's robot. He orders to arrest Ratigan while righteously calling him a "fiend".
- When he saw Olivia in the gears, he saves Olivia from being crushed to death. Together, they ran for their lives to escape from Ratigan.
- In the final battle, he tricked Ratigan into staying too much in the hand of the Elizabeth Tower until it rang, so that the bong of the Big Ben on the Elizabeth Tower would knock him off it, sending Ratigan to his demise.
- While he started off as stubborn and jerkish behavior, he subverted most of his negative traits later on in the film.
- He stands out for being the only one who could stop Ratigan and end his criminal career.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He still shows himself to be arrogant, sometimes even rude, and have quite an ego, even if it’s less compared with him from the start of the film.
- Like many incarnations of Sherlock Holmes, he lacks social skills and the feelings of others sometimes fly over his head.
Trivia[]
- In a scrapped idea for Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Basil would be Olivia's mentor, and he would be the one who created the Rescue Aid Society, that Bernard and Bianca are a part of, which would make him even more admirable.
- He is the only protagonist of a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie released in the 1980s that is not Pure Good. Because of this, it makes The Great Mouse Detective the only Disney animated film from the 1980s to not have any Pure Good heroes.
- The Fox and the Hound has Tod.
- The Black Cauldron has Taran and Gurgi.
- Oliver & Company has the titular character.
- The Little Mermaid has Princess Ariel and Prince Eric.
