Baloo is the deuteragonist of Disney's The Jungle Book franchise.
He is a lazy bear who lives in the jungle in a free and careless lifestyle. When a human cub named Mowgli, who is running from a tiger who wants him dead, named Shere Khan, encounters him, he makes a close bond with him and starts treating him like his child, teaching him his philosophy and way of living, though he, in the end, has to learn to move on from him and let him go to the human village, where he'd be safer than in the jungle.
He was voiced by the late Phil Harris in The Jungle Book, and by John Goodman in The Jungle Book 2.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
The Jungle Book[]
- When he first meets Mowgli, who attacks him in anger for no reason, instead of being angry, he finds it amusing and decides to teach him to fight and defend himself.
- He forms a close friendship with Mowgli, with their relationship eventually evolving into that of a father and a son.
- Despite not liking Bagheera's seriousness and rule following personality, he enjoys being his friend and respects him.
- Had a lot of fun with Mowgli in the jungle, teaching him about how to do things the bears way.
- He tries to prevent Mowgli from being taken away when the Bandar Log kidnap him.
- He teams up with Bagheera and forms a plan to rescue Mowgli from the Bandar Log.
- He dresses up as a Monkey and infiltrates the Bandar Log, having fun and dancing with King Louie to distract the monkeys and allow Bagheera to rescue Mowgli.
- When he finds out the one after Mowgli is Shere Khan, he finally takes a realistic look at the situation and agrees with Bagheera that the jungle is no safe place for him.
- While he pretends not to want Mowgli anymore and coldly scolds him and tells him to go away, it was because it was the only way to get Mowgli to go to the human village and be safe, and he was heartbroken by this.
- When Shere Khan attempts to kill Mowgli, he jumps in and fights Shere Khan, despite being no match for him in power, and is beaten near death, with this fight allowing Mowgli to defeat the tiger by setting his tail on fire.
- He and Bagheera walk happily into the jungle, as, despite being sad Mowgli had gone away, they were happy he'd be as safe as he could now.
The Jungle Book II[]
- While bringing Mowgli back to the Jungle was a mistake, he made sure the boy had a lot of fun at the start.
- Additionally, this act saved him from Shere Khan, who had invaded the village to kill Mowgli.
- He slowly realizes his mistake and has to learn, once again, how to let go of Mowgli and move on.
- He helps protect Shanti and Ranjan, despite disliking them (especially Shanti) at the start and not intending on bringing them to the jungle.
- He fights Shere Khan once again, preventing him from not only killing Mowgli, but also Shanti this time.
- He saves Mowgli and Shanti from falling into the lava volcano along with Shere Khan, who ended up imprisoned below a rock statue, presumably forever.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- There are some moments where he can be arrogant at times.
- He enjoyed listening to Bagheera praising him for his sacrifice, even though he didn't actually die, and played dead for a few seconds just so he could hear it more, and then shoved it in Bagheera face.
- He caused the whole plot of the second movie by not accepting Mowgli's absence and bringing him back to the jungle, endangering him and, this time, his friends, (albeit indirectly) as well as only taking the fact that a tiger wanted Mowgli dead seriously when he found out the tiger was Shere Khan.
- He can also be quite of a jerk to people who follow rules, such as Bagheera and Shanti, especially Shanti, whom he personally disliked for no other reason other than Mowgli's description of her.
