~ Bajie |
Bajie is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Tilda) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is a former Dark One who is searching for a way to contact the mythical city of Azra, hoping if he sends a signal to them they will return to fix the broken state of the Badlands. After years of searching, he crosses paths with Sunny in the Bordeaux Mines, and begins helping him to get back into the Badlands and find his family, all while still searching for a way to contact Azra.
He was portrayed by Nick Frost.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- After being told by Ankara that by contacting Azra he would essentially be saving the entire world as she led him to believe that the people living in Azra would come to fix the problems that existed in the Badlands, he dedicated his entire life to contacting them.
- He takes Minerva under his wing as an apprentice at the Abbot Monastery despite her being unruly, and after she violates the Monastery's rules and they decide to put her into a coma, Bajie sacrifices his Gift in order to revive her.
- He splits up with Minerva after saving her from the coma, and later abandons his wife Lily after being with her for several years. However, the reason he abandoned both of them is that he was searching for how to activate the Azran signal, which he genuinely thought would save the world, and he later reunited with both of them and apologized, calling it the biggest mistake of his life.
- When he and Sunny meet in the Bordeaux Mines, he is very friendly to Sunny and offers him booze, and after they escape together Bajie decides to help Sunny search for his wife Veil and son Henry despite it bringing not benefit to himself in any way.
- While he has some jerkish traits early on such as working with the smuggler Nos, he subverts almost all of his jerkish traits by the end of the series and stops associating with people like Nos completely. When he and Sunny go to meet with Nos, Sunny attacks him and his enforcers due to them abusing a Doll sex slave named Portia and her daughter Amelia, and while Bajie is hesitant to help at first his reasoning is that he doesn't want to squander Sunny's chances of getting back to his family, and once Sunny decides to fight Nos' enforcers Bajie immediately knocks out Nos and helps get Portia and Amelia to safety.
- After Sunny is put into a coma by an Abbot named Cyan, Bajie and M.K. go to the Abbot Monastery and risk their lives to find a cure, and successfully manage to save Sunny's life.
- Once they reach the Badlands, Sunny and Bajie initially are split up, but after Sunny goes after Baron Quinn to save Veil and Henry, Bajie goes to fight Quinn's Clippers with Sunny simply because he is his friend, and he nearly dies helping Sunny during the battle at Quinn's bunker.
- He is fatally injured while in the bunker, and uses his last bit of strength to reach the Azran radio tower and activate the signal. While this ends up backfiring since it actually calls the warlord Pilgrim, Bajie didn't know that and really did think he was saving the world by doing this.
- He ends up surviving and enters a depression due to initially believing that nobody came from the signal he sent out, but once he reunites with Sunny and learns that Veil has died and Henry has developed the Gift in infancy which will kill him if Sunny doesn't find a cure, Bajie drops everything and embarks on a quest to help Sunny save his son.
- After learning that Ankara lied to him and that his signal actually called Pilgrim to the Badlands and put it into serious danger, he immediately starts fighting to stop Pilgrim's conquest. When he and Sunny reach Pilgrim and ask for his help on curing Henry's Gift, Pilgrim reveals that he has a device called the Meridian Chamber which can control the Gift, and Bajie recognizes the danger of such a machine and immediately tries to destroy it.
- Bajie is imprisoned for trying to destroy the Meridian Chamber and Sunny helps Pilgrim activate it in order to save his son, however after his son is saved Sunny recognizes that Bajie was right and frees him, Bajie then takes Henry across the Badlands to Lydia, who can safely raise Henry, while Sunny attempts to destroy the Meridian Chamber himself.
- When Sunny is captured by the Black Lotus Bajie tracks the cult to their secret prison and breaks in so that he can save Sunny.
- When Sunny foolishly trusts Kannin despite how badly blind trust has blown up in his face in the past with the likes of Quinn, Pilgrim, and M.K., Bajie proceeds to call out the fact that he is just going to get himself killed, and promises that when he dies he will tell Henry that Sunny was a good man, but that he died because he wouldn't listen.
- After Sunny dies during the final battle against Pilgrim, Bajie promises that he will take Henry out of the Badlands and raise him someplace safe, and that he will stop drinking and sleeping around completely so he can be a good father to Henry, and also swears to tell Henry that his father was a good man and a great friend.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- By the end of the series he does redeem himself for most of his worst acts and apologizes to those he has wronged, but he has a few jerkish moments that are not subverted:
- When he and Sunny first meet, he attempts to sell Sunny out to the Engineer. The two of them do end up becoming close friends, but Bajie never apologizes for this.
- During his depression due to his belief that the Azran signal didn't do anything, Bajie is seen scamming people out of their money, and while he stops doing this after joining back up with Sunny, he never acknowledges this as wrong.
