Near Pure Good Hero Wiki

Astrid Hofferson-Haddock is the deuteragonist of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

She is a Viking warrior of Clan Hofferson of the Hooligan tribe, as well as Hiccup's longtime girlfriend and later wife by the time of the epilogue in The Hidden World. She at first strove to kill dragons when she became an actual Viking, but after the testimony of the bond Hiccup created with Toothless, was one of the first of her clan to accept them and eventually became one of the Dragon Riders of Berk, who protected dragons, and the island. Her dragon is a Deadly Nadder named Stormfly and one of her best friends.

She was voiced by America Ferrera in original version. In Italian version she is voiced by Letizia Scifoni, who also played Ladybug/Marinette Dupain-Cheng in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • She cares a lot about others, putting the blame on herself for Dagur's attack on Berk once, even if she wasn't able to do anything to prevent it.
  • She fought against dragons for noble reasons, as she wanted to prevent the dragons from threatening Vikings, and viewed them as nothing more than mindless monsters.
  • Although initially cold toward Hiccup, she never bullied him and become later kinder toward him.
  • She let go of her her xenophobic ways with dragons when Hiccup showed the other side of the story.
  • Tried to help Hiccup tell the truth about Red Death to the Vikings.
  • She convinced the other child Vikings to befriend dragons, and befriended one herself, Stormfly, helping in the battle against Red Death.
  • She helped Hiccup discover and catalogue new species of dragons to his research.
  • She helped the dragon riders defeat threats such as Johann.
  • She helped stop Ryker Grimborn from unleashing his genocidal campaign in the Barbaric Archipelago.
  • Helped stop Krogan from attacking Berk and wiping out its population,
  • She and Hiccup went back to warn Berk about Drago Bludvist after seeing a devastated fortress that was destroyed by him.
  • Forces Eret to show the way to Drago when she thinks he kidnapped Hiccup,
  • In the battle against Drago and his brainwashed dragon forces, Astrid and Stormfly vividly helped.
  • Her actions indirectly lead Eret to redeem himself.
  • Comforted Hiccup when Toothless (brainwashed by Drago) murdered Stoick against his will.
  • Helped Hiccup and the Dragon Riders destroy multiple operations of illegal dragon poacher and selling.
  • She saved Hiccup from Light Fury’s fire.
  • She helped defeat Grimmel the Grisly.
  • She supported Hiccup's plan to protect the dragons even if everyone else was against him.
  • When the time came, she, as well as the rest of the Vikings, freed their dragons so they could go to the Hidden World, where they would be safe from any threats forever, even if saying goodbye to Stormfly was painful to her.
  • She reunited with Toothless, Light Fury, their children, and Stormfly for a bit, having a wonderful moment where she, Hiccup and their children rode their dragons one last time.
  • She and Hiccup have been later an inspiration for their descendant, Tom Kullerson.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • While she loses her most of her arrogance as the story goes on, especially after the first film, she still can be jerkish or short-tempered sometimes, such as mocking her allies, being overly competitive, or exceedingly prideful.
    • She has a habit of frequently beating Snotlout up whenever he tries to flirt with her, and even though it’s understandable, it’s too excessive for a PG character, considering she sometimes beats him up even when he didn't do anything wrong. She also says that the Hoffersons and the Jorgensons will never stop being rivals.
    • Ruffnut rightfully complains about Astrid’s habit of frequently having to criticize other people after she belittled her and Tuffnut while not treating them with equal respect to Hiccup.
    • She threatened to kill Dagur if he betrays her and her friends to the Dragon Hunters. However, this was understandable because Dagur made multiple attempts on their lives before redeeming himself.
    • Calls Fishlegs "Fishface" and violently beat him up and sat on him.
    • She almost killed Throk with her axe, to the point where Hiccup had to stop her and get hurt instead.
    • It is unclear in the epilogue if she completely renounced these qualities.
  • She kissed Hiccup full on the lips multiple times without his consent even before they became a real couple. Even though these moments are typically played for laughs, it’s still too much for a PG character.

Trivia[]

  • She is one of the three heroes of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise to be NPG, the others being Fishlegs Ingerman and Stoick the Vast.
  • It is currently unknown if her Live-Action counterpart will also qualify as NPG or IA.
