His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Overall, he has no corrupting factors, always being presented as a reasonable and supportive authority figure against bigotry.
- Denounced Frollo for killing Quasimodo's mother in cold blood on the steps of the Notre Dame cathedral.
- Forced Frollo to refrain from trying to drown Quasimodo in a well, not caring about his deformed appearance. He then convinced Frollo to adopt and raise the orphaned boy as his own.
- Stopped Frollo from dragging Esmeralda out of the cathedral to be arrested for witchcraft when she sought sanctuary there.
- Advised Esmeralda not to antagonize Frollo further out of concern for her wellbeing.
- Protested and attempted to save Esmeralda and several other gypsies from being burnt at the stake by Frollo.
- Following the assault on the cathedral, he makes it clear he will no longer tolerate Frollo's crimes or violence in the Church.
- Celebrated Frollo's defeat alongside the other citizens.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He slightly fails the in-story admirable standard of the film to Quasimodo and Phoebus, who both played a much more active role in defeating Frollo and saving Paris, however, given that they have skills that the Archdeacon lacks, with Quasimodo having acrobatics skills and Phoebus being a skilled military officer, this is a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- In the original novel, Frollo was the archdeacon and started off good, until his lust for Esmeralda turned him into the villain. Here, the Archdeacon and Frollo are seperate characters, with the former having the latter's novel counterpart's good qualities, while movie Frollo is 100% evil.
- Although the Archdeacon was the one who originally saved Quasi's life, the two are never seen together onscreen. Though it is possible they may have interacted offscreen.
