The Archdeacon is the overarching protagonist of the Disney's 1996 animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He is the clergyman in Paris' Notre Dame cathedral who strongly opposes Frollo.
In the original film, he was voiced by the late David Ogden Stiers.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- He denounced Frollo for killing Quasimodo's mother in cold blood on the steps of the Notre Dame Cathedral.
- He also tried to save his mother when he heard her pleas for help, though he arrived too late.
- He forced Frollo to refrain from trying to drown Quasimodo in a well, not caring about his deformed appearance. He then convinced Frollo to adopt and raise the orphaned boy as his son.
- He allowed Quasimodo to live in the bell tower of Notre Dame, ensuring he grew up with a roof over his head.
- He stopped Frollo from dragging Esmeralda out of the cathedral to be arrested for witchcraft when she sought shelter there.
- He advised Esmeralda not to antagonize Frollo further out of concern for her wellbeing.
- He protested and attempted to save Esmeralda and several other Romani, including Captain Phoebus, from being burnt at the stake by Frollo.
- Following the assault on the cathedral, he made it clear he will no longer put up with Frollo's crimes or violence in the Church right before Frollo stood up to him.

- He slightly fails the admirable standards of the film to Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Phoebus, who all played a much more active role in defeating Frollo and saving Paris.
Trivia[]
- In the original novel, Frollo was the archdeacon and started off good, until his lust for Esmeralda turned him into the villain. Here, the Archdeacon and Frollo are seperate characters, with the former having the latter's novel counterpart's good qualities, while movie Frollo is 100% evil.
- Although the Archdeacon was the one who originally saved Quasi's life, the two are never seen together onscreen. However, it is possible they have interacted offscreen.
