“ | For so much of my life, I felt like everything was changing, all the time. I didn't have anyone I could rely on... Then thought I'd found a family, but it fell apart almost immediately. What I'm saying . . . I hate it when people let me down. | „ |
~ Annabeth, in The Last Olympian. |
Annabeth Chase is one of the main characters of Percy Jackson & the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus books in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, and is a supporting character in Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. She is the demigod daughter of Athena, Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Warfare, and a mortal man named Fredrick Chase. She is also Percy Jackson's main love interest, in spite of their deity parent's distain, and also his tutor and mentor. Annabeth has had more experience at Camp Half-Blood than any other camper and is a skilled warrior.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In general[]
- While initially very rude and condescending to Percy when they first met, mocking him simply for not being as experienced as her, Annabeth later sheds this quality and even fell in love with Percy over the course of the series. Though she still calls Percy names like "seaweed brain" from time to time, this is rarely out of malice and is mostly just an in-joke between them.
- Though she was initially very rude to Rachel in The Battle of the Labyrinth, dismissing her as a "mortal girl" unworthy of spending time with Percy, she later on sheds this corrupting quality. By the time of The Lost Hero, she and Rachel are friends and have completely put aside their past issues.
- Due to having less elemental powers compared to other half-bloods, she still passes the admirability standards out when compared to Percy.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians[]
- She teaches the much less experienced Percy what he needs to know as a half-blood in The Lightning Thief. She also volunteers to help him on his first quest, despite not needing to. Note that she did these kind acts even when she disliked Percy personally.
- Throughout the Percy Jackson books, she consistently belives Luke Castellan, her former friend turned evil, can be redeemed. In The Titan's Curse, she holds up the sky to help Luke, even when Luke betrays her soon after; in the same book she pleads Thalia to not kill Luke. Later in The Last Olympian she explains that she she deeply regrets turning down Luke's offer to escape with her.
- Furthermore, when Luke tries to convince her to join his side, Annabeth never does so and always remains opposed to evil. She is willing to fight Luke even when she still hopes he can be redeemed.
- In The Battle of the Labyrinth, she volunteers along with Percy, Grover, and Tyson to go on an incredibly dangerous quest to the Labyrinth so she can keep everyone at Camp Half-Blood safe from a potential invasion.
- She tries to convince Nico to stop holding his grudge with her and Percy, even when Nico refused to listen to reason.
- She is the one who tells Percy to give Luke her knife in The Last Olympian. Because of this, Annabeth personally helped vanquish the evil Titan Kronos for good and save the world. Afterwards, she and the redeemed Luke reconcile with one another on the latter's deathbed.
The Heroes of Olympus[]
- Over the course of The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune, she volunteers to go search for Percy as he went missing, going the extra mile to make sure he's safe.
- She mentors the less experienced demigods Leo and Piper when they first come to camp.
- In The Mark of Athena, she tries to reason with her mother's split-personality of Minerva, despite Minerva being mad with vengeance.
- Despite initially being spiteful towards Hazel out of jealousy, she later abandons this spite and became friends with her.
- She slays Arachne (which was incredibly brave considering her immense arachnophobia) and captures the Athena Parthenos, thus finally making sure that no more demigod children of Athena would go on this incredibly dangerous quest that demigods have been sent on (and died attempting) for centuries.
- At the end of The Mark of Athena, she selflessly tells Percy to let go of her as she's falling into Tartarus.
- In The House of Hades, she convinced Percy to listen to reason and stop choking Akhlys in his rage.
- In The Blood of Olympus, she saved Jason from being manipulated by a mania taking his mother's form.
- She helped the gods defeat Gaea and the Giants, thus helping to save the world. Even though Leo and Piper played a larger roles than her, she still played a notable part as one of the Seven.
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]
- She consistently shows concern for the well-being of her cousin Magnus Chase.
- She and Percy help out Magnus to prepare for his journey.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- By her own confession, she has a fatal flaw in the form of hubris, meaning excessive pride. It's more than an informed attribute and it's seen in the books; for instance, in The Battle of the Labyrinth, she taunted the Sphinx to give her a "real" challenge, which prompted the Sphinx to attack her friends. In another instance, which led to worse consequences, in The Mark of Athena, she arrogantly mocked Arachne for falling into her trap, leading to Arachne pulling her and Percy into Tartarus with her out of spite.
- She also has some moments of short-temperedness. Though she got better in this regard over the course of the books, she didn't completely shed this quality. For example, in The Mark of Athena, when Percy ran up to hug her, she judo-flipped him back because she was upset at him for leaving her worried for him.
