Sang-woo? Sang-woo, I'm done with this side. Sang-woo! Sang-woo!
~ Ali's final words before being eliminated by the guards.

Ali Abdul (Korean: 알리 압둘), also referred to as Player 199, is a main character in Season 1 of Netflix's K-drama Squid Game. He is a migrant worker from Pakistan who came to South Korea with his wife and child and later joined the Squid Game to win the prize money to provide for his family.

He was portrayed by Anupam Tripathi.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • He is a very kind, naive, and selfless individual that stands out as a helpful and friendly person considering how corruptible most of the Squid Game players are, including the heroic ones.
  • While he did crush his employer's hand, it was purely accidental and all he wanted was to get his paycheck to support his family. This can also be justified considering his employer had refused to give him his paycheck for 6 months.

Squid Game[]

  • Ali is shown to care about his family, as all of his efforts in Korea were to get money so he could support his wife and infant son.
  • He joins the Squid Game so he could get financial support for his family, and once he realizes what the Squid Games were about, he voted to stop the games to stop any more deaths.
  • He rescues Gi-hun during Red Light, Green Light and helps him make it to the finishing line, saving him.
  • He rejoins the game so he could support his family. Although he knew losing the game would mean death, he had no idea that some games (eg. Tug of War) involved killing people.
  • He is shown to be polite and humble, repeatedly thanking Cho Sang-woo for giving him money for the bus, allowing him to use his phone and buying food for him.
  • He constantly shows concern for other members of his team and is always glad and relieved when they make it through the games.
  • During the night riot, he saves Gi-hun again with the help of Sang-woo, defending him from hostile players and Sae-byeok from Deok-su's team, forcing them back with a large piece of mattress when they start to overpower his team.
  • Helps to look for Il-nam as he went missing in the riot and is relieved to see he's okay afterwards.
  • Invited Player 276 to his team before the third game due to him being a Pakistani too.
  • Used his strength to help his team win the Tug-of-War game and saved Gi-hun from falling over the edge. Just like everyone else, he takes no pleasure in killing the other players.
  • Despite somewhat playfully mocking Han Mi-nyeo after the third game, this is justified since she wasn't telling the truth about trusting Sang-woo with his plan during the Tug-of-War game. Even then, the scene is played somewhat for laughs.
    • When Mi-nyeo starts insulting him, he doesn't argue back with her and just looks away sadly.
  • Helped his team set up a barricade to protect themselves if Deok-su's team tried to start another riot.
  • After the Tug-of-War game, he keeps night watch with Sang-woo to alert their team for any night riots from Deok-su, also giving the corn he got for dinner to Sang-woo as thanks for saving his life during the third game.
  • Despite becoming close friends with Sang-woo, Ali is initially hesitant to accept the offer because he sees that Gi-hun was about to ask Sang-woo to be his partner. Understanding Sang-woo and Gi-hun's close relationship, Ali only accepts Sang-woo's offer when Gi-hun says that it is okay because he will look for someone else to be his game partner.
  • Refuses to play the Marbles game with Sang-Woo since he didn’t want to get him killed.
  • Even when Sang-woo got aggressive, starting to grab and yell at him, Ali never retaliated or got hostile towards Sang-woo despite being stronger.
  • Despite him not being willing to sacrifice himself for Sang-woo in the Marbles game, it is understandable as Ali tells Sang-woo that he also has a family waiting for him. He is visibly distraught as he tells Sang-woo this, crying and apologizing to him.
  • He believes Sang-woo for telling him a way for them to survive the round and even gives his marble pouch to Sang-woo, before heading off to check on the others so that both of them survive. This ultimately is a trick, causing Ali to be eliminated. However, he doesn't show anger after being betrayed, only showing sadness and distraught at his demise.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He fails the admirable standards to several characters, most notably Gi-hun himself. While Ali and Gi-hun can't be compared via resources, as Gi-hun has way more power and also has several subordinates, Gi-hun uses his abilities (along with Player 120, Jung-bae and several others) to lead a rebellion against the games.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Squid Game hero to be Near Pure Good.
  • Before the second season was released, Ali was Pure Good since the admirable standards of Squid Game were much lower, but he was later removed due to failing the standards that then got higher.
