Alakay, or more commonly known as Alex by his adoption, and self-proclaimed as the King of New York City, is the main protagonist of the Madagascar franchise.
He is a lion from the New York Zoo, who is best friends with the animals Marty, Melman, and Gloria. He and his friends get into some big trouble when they're accidentally shipped to Madagascar, an island inhabited mostly by lemurs and fossa. After that, they'd have more wacky adventures across the world, from Africa to Europe.
He was voiced by Ben Stiller in the movies. In the one hour episode of The Penguins of Madagascar, he is voiced by Wally Wingert. In a brief cameo in the finale episode of All Hail King Julien, he is voiced by Crispin Freeman.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He subverted most of the corrupting qualities that he had at the start of the first movie, including being too arrogant, a wrathful anti-hero and caring only for himself, learning to consider others’ problems in the second film.
Madagascar[]
- When Marty escaped the zoo to head to "the wild", Alex, alongside Gloria and Melman, raced to Grand Central Station to save him.
- He tried to build a Statue of Liberty beacon so he and his friends could be rescued.
- He said he was sorry for being a jerk to his friends, and joins Marty on the "fun side" of the Island.
- He tries to meet and be friends with the lemurs.
- Even if inadvertently at first, he protected the lemurs from the fossa.
- When he went feral out of hunger and almost killed Marty, he immensely regretted doing so and isolated himself on the fossa side of the island to protect him.
- He eventually felt remorse over nearly hurting his friends and got over his feral state.
- He scared away the fossa for good, saving his friends, the penguins, and the lemurs of Madagascar from them.
- To satisfy his need for meat without hurting anyone, he stops eating steak in favor of sushi.
Merry Madagascar[]
- After accidently shooting Santa Claus down, he helped give gifts to children across the world.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa[]
- He was happy to see his family and tried to bond with them.
- Tried to learn to be a good king of the Savannah so he could rule after his father.
- He apologized to Marty for being a poor friend, recognizing he never thought of Marty having his own problems.
- Saved Zuba by dancing, distracting the New Yorkers.
- He defeated Nana, who was trying to kill the animals by releasing the water, and indirectly also Makunga by doing so, when Nana defeated him.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted[]
- He helped his friends get from Africa to where the penguins were.
- Helped temporarily defeat Chantel DuBois for the first time during their chase, saving his friends, the penguins and monkeys from her.
- While he and the Zoosters did lie to the circus crew, it was only so he could save his friends and himself.
- He saved Stefano from an angry mob.
- He tried to get the Circus to be stable again, and took all of their hopes up once again.
- Convinced Vitaly to keep chasing his dreams and get over his fear of what happened in the past. He was also empathetic to Vitaly’s trauma, showing he has learned to be considerate of others.
- He told Marty that leaving the zoo was the best thing that has ever happened to them.
- He defeated Chantel DuBois for good, ending her animal poaching and giving her well-deserved karma at last.
The Penguins of Madagascar[]
- In his special guest appearance in the Penguins of Madagascar episode, "The Return of the Revenge of Dr. Blowhole.", while he is only see as a spirit guide in Skipper’s imagination who assists him after Skipper loses his memory due to Dr. Blowhole's Mind Jacker, Alex assisted Skipper on his voyage to regain his memory and return to New York to rescue the city from Dr. Blowhole's evil grasp.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He is still a bit arrogant about what he can do, as well as having some cocky moments that still hold up across the third movie, such as fighting Nana because she hit him, and making fun of Vitaly's surly behavior (though this was because the latter was being abrasive even when he tried being friendly and before learning his backstory, so it’s a minor prevention), and calling himself the animals' leader because he invented the phases of getting into the casino.
Trivia[]
- Alex and Private are the only characters from Madagascar to be approved as Near Pure Good.
