Akira Fudō aka Devilman is the main protagonist of the Devilman Crybaby anime series. Once a regular human, he gained the power of the demon Amon after being inducted into a Sabbath ritual organized by his best friend Ryo Asuka.
His Good Ranking[]
What makes him close to Pure Good?[]
- Unlike his manga counterpart, this incarnation of Akira is a more sensitive and caring person who would cry on anyone's behalf, such as Koda’s who had suppressed his emotions at the time
- Saved a critically injured cat and took care of it, even going as far as telling Ryo not to kill it with a box cutter, despite it dying sometime later.
- He attempted to protect his childhood friend Miki from a malicious gang after school
- Conquered Amon's possession and took his powers for himself thanks to his pure heart, later using Amon's powers to fight demons in order to save mankind.
- Although he massacred a bunch of demons at the Sabbath Party, this was only to save Ryo from getting killed by the other demons. Furthermore, it should be noted that he was still adjusting to his newly found demonic powers as evident in the next episode where he states he didn’t remember much.
- While he did start off as cocky and developed intense sexual desires towards attractive women (going so far as to watch a porn video at full volume inside his school's projector room) after his personality change, he still maintains his caring side and later subverts these qualities as the series progresses.
- Despite his murderous intent toward demons, he understood the ability to love in the otherwise bloodthirsty demonic creatures such as Kaim and Sirene, showing empathy towards some of them.
- When Ryo tries to kill Miki on the off chance she remembers seeing Akira in his devilman form, he refuses to let him do so and ends up convincing him to let her live.
- Even though he killed Jinmen who trapped his victims’ souls including his parents’ in his shell which inevitably led to the souls’ deaths despite them begging not to die, it was the only way Akira could save the souls; additionally, he showed great remorse after what he did.
- Instead of killing Koda after his bloodthirsty and murderous rampage, Akira states he’ll save him by flying into the night sky carrying Koda before the authorities show up to protect him from harm.
- He takes the deceased Makimura family (except for Miki) off to a hill and gives them a proper burial.
- After Ryo reveals Akira is a demon on international television, he talks Miki and her friends out of their anger and agrees to leave so he wouldn't draw attention to them.
- As Devilman, he defends a group of ordinary humans getting assaulted and accused of being demons by an angry mob. This causes him to weep for them and ultimately convince the mob that what they were doing was wrong.
- Teamed up with humanity and all the devilmen in the battle against Satan and all of demonkind.
- In spite of his defeat at the hands of Satan, Akira's death emotionally touches Ryo and causes him to realize that he killed the only person he ever loved.
What Prevents him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Much like his manga counterpart, he still retains a bit of lethality:
- After witnessing Miki’s dismembered head paraded on a pike by a crazed mob, he massacred them in a rage, thus completely shattering his faith and hope for the betterment of humans. He also usually kills demons brutally and later wages war on Satan which destroys all traces of civilization on Earth and wipes out the Devilmen and demons along with him. However, some or most of these kills are understandable and justified due to the reasons listed above, and even after Miki's death, he still reluctantly joins forces with humanity to put a stop to Satan. Hence, it’s a fairly minor prevention.
