Akame is the titular deuteragonist of the manga and anime series Akame ga Kill!, and the titular main protagonist of its prequel spin-off manga: Akame Ga Kill! Zero, as well as the deuteragonist of the manga Hinowa ga Crush!.
A girl once sold off by her parents into slavery along with her younger sister Kurome, she began to live life as an assassin for the Empire and became part of 7 assassins called the Elite Seven. Soon enough, she resigned from her position once she was eventually hired to assassinate Najenda, but she later joined the latter and became a part of Night Raid, where they perform numerous assassinations and reconnaissance to help take down the Empire due to its widespread corruption causing harm to several innocent people across the land.
Although she is normally stoic and does not show much emotion, she is deeply fair and compassionate towards other people.
Although she worked for the Empire and presumably killed many people, this does not serve as a severe deterrent to her status for the following reasons:
Unlike her sister, Kurome, she never showed any sadistic joy in killing her enemies and only did so because it was her job.
She thought she was doing the right thing, as she and her companions were taught that they fought to make people happy and as such, she genuinely believed that her actions were for the greater good.
Because she and the other assassins were brainwashed at the hands of the Empire, she had slight moral agency issues.
Even when fighting for the Empire, she showed many moments of doubt, wondering if they were really doing the right thing after all.
She redeems herself by abandoning the Empire to fight for the people's freedom and showed immense remorse for the lives she took under the Empire's orders.
Avoiding killing is practically nearly impossible in Akame Ga Kill since it is a very "kill or be killed" work given its themes, meaning it wouldn't be possible anyways to not kill people.
Although she is an assassin, she always limits herself to only killing villains and confirmed corrupt people, never once has her actions harmed any innocents.
History[]
Akame ga Kill! Zero[]
She leads Martha into a graveyard to try to prove that she is innocent.
After killing Martha and realizing that she was pretending to be a spy, she cries and mourns for her loss.
Gives Kurome her drugs for withdrawal symptoms.
She was directly responsible for killing Merraid Oarburgh, an extremely heinous individual. Even after killing her, she still felt partial sympathy for her and even made a grave for her, showing that she's willing to sympathize with her enemies no matter how evil they are.
After being sent to kill General Najenda, she finally leaves from the Empire and joins the rebels after being swayed by her words.
When offered to join the Revolutionary Army, she didn't accept the offer right away and tried to convince her comrades to leave the Empire along with her first.
She started by trying to ask Kurome to leave and even though she rejected, Akame didn't give up on her and was still determined to leave with her by any means necessary.
She confided in her close friend, Tsukushi and opened up to her about everything she was feeling and wanted them to leave the empire together. Even when Tsukushi ultimately refused her due to wanting to stay with her comrades, Akame held nothing against her.
She tried her absolute hardest to take Kurome away from the Empire with her before she left, even carrying the latter away so that they wouldn't be separated. Even though she was ultimately unsuccessful in her task, it proved that she undeniably didn't want to abandon her and would've taken Kurome with her if she could.
Furthermore, Gozuki stated that the main reason he was able to catch up with Akame and intercept her before she could escape was because she was carrying Kurome with her, implying that she likely could've escaped had she left on her own but chose to take Kurome with her even though it jeopardized her objective.
When she was set up by Tsukushi, who had a conversation with her and signaled Gozuki for when she declared her intentions of leaving the empire, Akame wasn't angry at Tsukushi and only knocked her unconscious so she could escape without actually harming her.
Though she did say that she was going to kill Gozuki when confronted by him, it was simply because she had no choice solely because they wouldn't be able to see eye-to-eye after Akame chose to defect and Gozuki even stated that he saw Akame as nothing more than a mere traitor after she made her choice.
After stabbing Gozuki with Murasame, as he slowly dies from the sword's curse, she bids him farewell in his final moments which showed that even though they became enemies, Akame still viewed him as her father.
While Akame ended up cutting down Tsukushi and killing her with Murasame's curse, it was only done in self-defense since Tsukushi had the muzzle of her gun pointed to Akame's head at point-blank range which certainly would've killed her. Even though her killing Tsukushi was relatively understandable given it was a life-or-death situation, Akame still couldn't help but feel immense remorse for it.
Even after she left the Empire to join the Revolutionary Army, Akame was genuinely devastated by the decisions she had to make and people she ended up losing and wasn't even willing to mourn their deaths, believing she had no right to do so since she chose her path despite knowing the consequences that could come with it. She later burst into tears after being reassured by Leone, showing that she truly cared about her comrades despite choosing to leave the Empire and was devastated by their deaths, namely Tsukushi.
Akame ga Kill![]
Goes to Aria's mansion with her team to eliminate her and her family who tortured a lot of innocent people and are even responsible for the deaths of Tatsumi's friends: Sayo and Ieyasu, making their deaths completely deserved.
Even though she tried to kill Tatsumi for stopping her from killing Aria, that's partially understandable given who Aria is. Furthermore, she tried to civilly ask him to get out of the way twice because he wasn't a target, resorting to trying to kill him only when he refused to and still tried to stop her. Anyway, she subverts this by becoming friends with Tatsumi later and even sympathized with him once he found out the truth, allowing him to kill Aria himself and avenge his fallen friends.
Checks if Tatsumi is hurt herself after his battle with Orge when he insisted that he managed to win with little injury. Once she confirmed that Tatsumi was actually uninjured, she became relieved that he was telling truth since she claims to have lost several allies due to them being too prideful to show their wounds, expressing genuine concern for his well-being while showing that she does care about him and even congratulates the latter for completing his first mission.
Tries to surmise a plan to rescue Tatsumi when she is informed that she was kidnapped by Esdeath and forced into the Empire.
Tells the rest of Night Raid that they all must find a way to save Tatsumi and doesn't stop even when they try to convince her otherwise, saying that she would do anything for Tatsumi and that they should as well.
She saves Tatsumi from being killed by a Danger Beast when he was too injured to fight it off himself.
When Night Raid was ambushed by Stylish's minions, she protects Lubbock when he was chased down by hordes of them.
Though all of Night Raid took part for Stylish's defeat given they all worked together, Akame was the one who dealt the finish blow albeit with the assistance of Tatsumi, but this is still admirable since Akame did so while poisoned and it would've been much harder to defeat Stylish without her teigu.
Tries calling a doctor for Leone when she got badly hurt in a fight and advised her to seek medical attention, showing clear concern for her well-being.
Reconciles with her sister Kurome and moves on from trying to kill her, even telling her to live a happy life once they finally settle their differences with each other. While she does breaks down into tears afterwards, this was simply because she was overwhelmed and emotionally relieved at no longer having to kill her sister.
Even though in the anime she does ultimately end up killing her, this does not make her lethal considering she only acted to put Kurome out of her misery (who was already dying as pointed out by Run) and still deeply cared for Kurome as her motivation for killing her was driven by her love for the latter in the first place. Even after she succeeded, Akame was still heartbroken at having to kill Kurome since she cried in Tatsumi's arms while mourning her.
Furthermore, she also thanked Wave for taking care of Kurome until the very end and didn't attack him despite them still being enemies at the time.
Fights Esdeath not only for the amount of suffering she's caused, but also to protect Tatsumi (as Esdeath would often sexually harass Tatsumi when he clearly doesn't enjoy nor like it).
In the anime when she defeats Esdeath, though she initially tries to stop her, she watches as the latter freezes herself alongside Tatsumi (who dies in this version of the series) in her final moments. As she is left to witness, she acknowledges that Esdeath really did love Tatsumi and sympathized with her briefly despite everything Esdeath had done and them being sworn enemies.
While she did stab Tatsumi, she only did so to kill Tyrant so that Tatsumi would be able to fulfill his promise on not dying.
Hopes that there will be a cure for Murasame's curse for her pain.
Thinks to herself that she wouldn't trade the time that she spent with her friends for anything else in the world, proving how deeply she cared for them all and vows that she will continue living on for all the comrades she lost throughout her journey.
Hinowa ga Crush![]
When Hinata offers her a place to stay, she rewards the latter by teaching her swordsmanship.
Saves Hinata from being killed by Yomihime.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
Given she is an assassin, she is still considered too lethal to be PG for obvious reasons. She even attempted to kill Tatsumi for defending Aria despite the fact that he was oblivious of Aria's crimes and true nature.
However, this is a minor prevention, as she is lethal only to the people who are way worse, dangerous killers, or completely irredeemable. She avoids harming any innocent people and becomes far more sympathetic over time. She also didn't know Tatsumi was obvious to Aria's crimes in addition.
She also ends up sympathizing with Tatsumi when he finds out the truth and eventually begins caring for him greatly when he joins Night Raid.
Trivia[]
Fittingly, both of her archnemeses, Merraid Oarburgh and Esdeath, are both Near Pure Evil, Akame's direct opposite in terms of morality given that she's Near Pure Good. Tatsumi may also qualify, pairing him with Esdeath as his archenemy.
It is even more fitting that Akame's Chaotic Good, whereas both Merraid and Esdeath are Lawful Evils, another case of them having completely opposite moral alignments.
